Activities at Derham House Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Life at Derham House Care Home

FIFA World Cup

World Cup fever has hit Derham House! Our home is decorated with flags and our residents cannot wait to enjoy the action over the next few weeks.

Today we gathered together to watch England's opening game with snacks and beer. We are hoping to watch pretty much all the matches and we are excited to see how Gareth’s boys get on!

English National Ballet Company

Today at Derham House we welcomed back the English National Ballet Company into the home with our second 12 week program joining us for the live sessions was Cheryl (dancer) & Morgan (musician). Our activities, inspired by ENB’s distinctive repertoire, explored rhythm, dance style and themes, helping to build expression, physical strength, balance and confidence. Through uplifting live music from the piano played by Morgan the residents was taken on a new journey beautifully animated by Cheryl the story of Swan Lake & the love between the prince & a swan. The residents were enchanted by the story and learnt new skills and remembered some old movements too. As you can see our residents are doing incredibly well and are looking forward to the next class.

Memory Walk

Our Derham Darlings walked for everyone's loved ones at Chelmsford Memory Walk at Hylands Park on Sunday 9 October 2022 for Alzheimer's Society. The sun was shining and laughter was in abundance. 7K of walking created blisters and muscles that ached. However, over £1000 (still counting) has been raised for a cause close to our hearts. Well done each and every one of you.

Ahoy there!

Shiver me timbers! Today at Derham we took part in talk like a pirate day. Staff and residents dressed for the occasion those who did not partake were made to walk the plank. The residents enjoyed swashbuckling sword fights and stories of Blackbeard, "Black Bart" Roberts, and Captain William Kidd became very famous, and their names are synonymous with piracy. The residents then enjoyed watching pirates of the Caribbean in the cinema and the film went down a treat.

Honouring our late Queen Elizabeth II

Today at Derham house we remembered the queen with an afternoon tea, befitting a queen.

We decorated the home with a condolence table so the residents can write something with the tag going on our memory tree we also got out our best china befitting a queen.

The residents enjoyed tea and cakes made by the lovely Mr & Mrs Thompson the Victoria sponge cake went down very well thank you Ian & kay the lemon drizzle wasn’t that bad either.

We then had a reminiscing session and there was a lot of fond memories of her majesty one resident talking about her diamond wedding anniversary card she received from the queen to one resident meeting the queen when she was a little girl & saying how lovely she was.

Ma’am from all of us at Derham House we would just like to say thank you for 70 years of wonderful service you did your parents family and your public proud.

Garden Centre

Today at Derham house we took a trip to the garden centre for a spot of lunch. The day was made extra special as we took a married couple who have recently arrived at the home. They have always gone there for lunch every week they said so we were very pleased that you asked us. We enjoyed having a mooch around looking at the clothes and all the beautiful plants the smell was amazing. But the icing on the cake was the surprise one lady got when her grandson surprised her on his 17th birthday they say a picture paints a thousand words it definitely did that and more she was so happy and the feeling was mutual. Roll on for our second trip of the week!!
