Activities at Fordmill Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Julia Constandache

Senior Activities Coordinator

I’m Julia and I have been working at Fordmill since December 2016. I really enjoy art and studied Graphic Design & Illustration in Dundee. I love being with people and using my skills to improve their quality of life and bring a smile to their faces through crafts, games and all sorts of other activities.

I plan out the activities, either for groups or individuals, according to specific needs and interests. It’s a real joy to get to know residents and their loved ones and I’m grateful to Barchester for giving me the opportunity to work with them and bring some sunshine into the residents’ lives.

Under the sea

To celebrate World Photography Day we had our own Photoshoot for our residents and some of the relatives. As we are nearly at the end of the summer we thought it will be very nice to have an under the sea theme. Each resident had their picture taken either just themselves, with a fellow residents or family. It was a lovely afternoon and some of the residents were reminiscing about their childhood when they would have their family picture taken. Everyone really enjoyed posing for their pictures.

Inside Mayfair

Residents across our services had a fantastic time joining Mandy Morrow for a virtual walking tour to learn about the ‘Herstory’ of Mayfair. The Mayfair of Nightingales may be long gone but it still holds a 20th century charm. Birthplace to the late Queen Elizabeth II, home to one of WWII's most decorated female war heroes and a tale of a wealthy Aristocrat and one of France's favourite designers.

We were delighted to take a walk down memory lane and discover stories from one of London's most iconic areas.  The experience was truly enjoyed by all.

USA Independence day Celebration

We spent the afternoon celebrating American's Independence Day by listening to Country Music, enjoying a drink and a hot dog finishing off with a Quiz about USA. Everyone had a great time with laughter and friendship. Kathy was very excited an raised a glass to her daughter who lives in Texas.

World Chocolate Day

Today we celebrated World Chocolate Day. Residents, staff and visitors were treated with a Chocolate Fountain display where they could choose their favourite fruit and marshmallow to dip in. It was a very sweet day!

TUKTUK ride for a Charity

Wow, Wow, Wow! Tilly & Tuker

This afternoon we welcomed this amazing family travelling around coastline of Scotland with the hope of raising money in aid of Ellen Macarthur Cancer Trust. They arrived at Fordmill in their wee tuktuks and they gave a life experience to some of our residents that were able to get on and have a ride around the town. Some of the staff and relatives enjoyed a ride too. We would like to say a huge THANK YOU, to every single staff member at Fordmill, residents, families and friends who donated for such an amazing cause.

Virtual Trip to Romania

Where are we going next time, our residents were all wondering after the last virtual flight to Japan. Well, today finally dawned and everyone was up, ready and raring to go on our flight to ROMANIA.  Doris couldn't wait to climb aboard, she asked if she could be first in line! Shirley very kindly checked everyone's passports before they entered the plane to make sure all was good. Once thorough their Passports and boarding passes tightly clasped, pilot Derek and his hostess Julia both dressed in traditional Romanian Garb, welcomed everyone aboard and ushered them to their first class window seats.

Hearts racing with anticipation of the imminent take off, the engines revved up to a screaming crescendo, and the plane sprung forward. Before we knew it, we were in the air doing a very steep climb up to the heavens.  Everyone hung onto their seats until the seatbelt light went off and in that moment, all the worried faces turned into a sea of brimming smiles. Our passengers indulged in some Romanian delights and some Romanian wine, while the pilot and the hostess entertained by dancing a traditional Romanian dance. Margaret couldn't believe how much fun it was and was still chatting about Romania at tea time.

Julia put on a wonderful display of traditional Romanian culture and Hazel spent ages just mesmerised by what she saw, she wanted to try on all the clothes! What an airline!
