Activities at Hurstwood View Care Home

Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Lisa Everson

Activities Coordinator & Speak Up Champion

I’m Lisa, Activities Coordinator here at Hurstwood View.

I’ve been working at Hurstwood View in varying departments since 2017, shortly after the birth of my second child. With a strong background in Marketing, events, and community engagement - Activities is a great fit for me! I love arranging events and making a difference to our residents’ day.  I’ve never danced so much since working here, no day is ever the same, and we really do have so much fun!

Competition Time At Hurstwood View

We had lots of fun with our staff pet competition this afternoon.

In true Hurstwood style, there was nothing ordinary about our entries, which even included sheep and cows!

Our Residents had so much fun choosing their favourite pet from our board, and adding their vote. After all of our Residents and staff had voted, we were pleased to announce our winners.

Get Barchester Moving

‘Get Barchester Moving’ is a Foundation Week initiative encouraging a week of physical activity in our homes. This is set to include our team, residents, relatives and whole home community here at Hurstwood View.

Today we kicked off the week with a wonderful seated yoga session run by Suzi Tait. Suzi guided us through 45 minutes of gentle stretching, breath work and relaxation.

Residents loved following, and Suzi offered some wonderful alternatives to ensure we were inclusive to all abilities.

We made sure to rehydrate afterwards, with some fresh fruit smoothies served by our wonderful Chef, Suman.

Weekly Visits From Albie The Dog

Our Friday morning visits from our Pets As Therapy dog, Albie, always bring so many smiles to our Residents faces.

Albie always becomes a great talking point, and the option for Residents to reminisce about their own pets over the years.

It’s been so lovely to see our Residents building a relationship with Albie, and his owner Vickie - he’s now a firm favourite on our planner.

Getting To Know Each Other

One of our favourite games to play on Memory Lane is our ‘Getting To Know Me’ board game.

It’s a great way of starting conversations, getting to know residents and what their interests and what is meaningful to them.

It is also a really lovely way of creating friendships with those that have similar interests.

Here at Hurstwood we go above and beyond to support people with new friendships to help them feel safe, settled and happy.

Recreating My Favourite Recipe

Yesterday afternoon was our Baking Club here at Hurstwood View. However this was a very special one and led by resident, Mary.

Mary has always been a wonderful baker and picked up her cheese scone recipe from when she was with her local WI.

With the help of our Head Chef Karen. Mary held a masterclass on how to make them, explaining the step by step recipe.

Once ready everyone got to sample the freshly baked scones and of course enjoyed every mouthful.

It was a lovely afternoon with lots of reminiscing about after the war and a special tribute to honour VE Day.

Lets Celebrate Equality, Diversity And Inclusion

Staff and Family at Hurstwood View care home in Five Ash Down came together for a celebration of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion where each and every one of us is respected, valued and applauded for our unique qualities.

In a celebration of diversity, staff members cooked a wide variety of different dishes for the everyone to sample from their home countries which included Romania, Jamaica, France, India, Ukraine & more.

Kirsty Heaver, General Manager at Hurstwood View said: “At Hurstwood View, we all love to celebrate our diversity, we have so many different nationalities and cultures here that we wanted to spend some time together in recognition of that and to say everyone is welcome here and everyone is equal.  We all had a wonderful time celebrating our different cultures, our residents loved hearing about the staff’s different home countries and sampling all the delicious dishes.  It was such a fantastic event that I think we’re going to make it a regular celebration!”
