Activities at Laurel Bank Care Home

Activities are a fundamental part of a rich and varied lifestyle here at Laurel Bank Care Home, which is why we organise both physically and mentally stimulating social events for those we support. The weekly itinerary is ever-changing, and regularly includes art lessons, chair-based exercise, trips and visits from a variety of different animals, as well as one-to-one time for residents who prefer the peace and quiet. Our team actively tries to incorporate the hobbies and interests that are meaningful to residents into the activities schedule as encouragement to continue with much-loved pastimes.

Jaimy Lee Almond

Activities Coordinator

Hi, my name is Jaimy Lee, and I am the Activities Coordinator here at Laurel Bank.

I have worked in the care home industry for over nine years. I started working at Laurel Bank in 2018 as a carer, and then, I was promoted to senior carer which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I moved over to activities in 2020, as I was asked to help out and help encourage residents to join in. During this, I realised how much fun it could be and chose to stay on and got promoted to Activities Coordinator.

I love my role as every day is different and I try to make sure the residents are happy and engage in meaningful activities, this also helps support the transition for new residents.

Life at Laurel Bank Care Home

Christmas Fayre

For Laurel Banks Christmas fayre we had entertainer Boogie Bill sing all the Christmas Classics while we enjoyed Christmas market food of Yorkshire pudding wraps, ginger bread trees, mulled wine and hot chocolate. In the gardens was decorated beautifully, we had Santa’s grotto for all the children to visit Santa and him give them all presents. We had our Christmas hut selling all sorts from flashing wands to sweet treats. Our admin mum had spent the year knitting so that we had our own stall. The whole day was fantastic!

Sybil’s 102nd Birthday

Sybil enjoyed her 102nd birthday with very close friends, staff and residents with a very special afternoon of cheese and wine! Jenn at Laurel bank sent out a plea to help Sybil collect 102 cards for her 102nd birthday! She never knew she would then become famous being all over the papers and on BBC Lancashire radio. It was definitely a birthday to remember.

Bonfire Night

We celebrated bonfire night with bonfire night party for residents, family and even the community this year. With the fireworks being cancelled at Lancaster castle Lyndsay the manager decided she wanted to save Lancaster! We drank mulled wine, hot chocolate enjoyed burgers and hot dogs whilst watching our firework display!

Christmas Light switch on

Lighting up Laurel Bank has come around even bigger and better this year and the community came together to see the home’s Christmas lights switched on. Staff and residents at Barchester’s Laurel Bank care home, in Lancaster, got in the Christmas spirit by inviting the community to come and join in with staff and residents who all gathered in the home’s garden for the occasion. There was mulled wine, hot chocolate, mince pies, all freshly prepared by our chef Melvin to keep everyone warm.  The Christmas tree and all the lights looked amazing when Golfer Gary Wolstenholme flicked the switch for the big reveal. We had the Gospel Peace choir sing all the Christmas carols beautifully, all organised by Adewale who works at Laurel Bank

Vegetable patch

Last summer, the Lower School helped Laurel Bank, set up a small vegetable plot. You might remember hearing about them planting carrots, parsnips, beetroot and other vegetables. The children returned to take part in the harvest. Although the carrots were less successful, the children pulled up handfuls of delicious looking parsnips and beetroot. These were carried back to their school, where some were set aside for children to take home for their evening meal, and the rest taken to the kitchen to be scrubbed.

Staff bake off

Staff at Laurel Bank took part in the first of Laurel Bank bake off 2023. There was a delicious variety from chocolate brownies to pumpkin bites we have some very talented bakers here at Laurel Bank. A huge congratulations to the winners of our Laurel Bank Bake Off! The first prize went to Tracey who made the best chocolate brownies ever.

The biggest thank you to all of our bakers who got involved! We're so proud of everyone pulling together and having some fun, and our residents definitely enjoyed themselves and their sweet treats!
