Activities at Melbourn Springs Care Home

Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is a major focus of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat will always be welcomed.

Life at Melbourn Springs Care Home

Christmas Fayre

Melbourn Springs Christmas Fayre

Staff, residents, relatives and the local community came together at Melbourn Springs to enjoy a community Christmas Fayre that was held in the home on 4th December
The hospitality team at Melbourn Springs served a selection of home made minced pies and mulled wine including which were enjoyed by everyone who came to the event. They also produced a lovely Christmas cake which everyone attending was asked to try and guess the weight and this was won by one of the residents Barbara who got it spot on and won the cake which she shared with her friends at Melbourn Springs. Guests included friends and family to the residents and staff at the home, and some of our local crafting community who came along and held stalls at the event for some unique handmade Christmas gifts.
Residents, said, “They thoroughly enjoyed the day surrounded by lots of great people. Staff did a great job, not just on the day, but organising the event and getting everyone together.”

Maria Anghelide General Manager at the home, said: “Staff at Melbourn Springs are dedicated to making sure that the home is a hub of the local community, and this event, along with all their hard work, has definitely paid off. It was a resounding success!”

Vera's wish comes true!

We do our best at Melbourn Springs to offer the residents activities that will bring a smile to their faces and make their wishes comes true.

Our resident Vera hadn't been swimming for years but felt sure that being in the water would bring back lots of lovely memories. And so, Siobhan in our Activities Team volunteered to go in too - they both bobbed about until Vera felt confident enough to float with Siobhan supporting her as she twirled around.

A special thank you to Dean at Letchworth Leisure Centre for all your help too!

We won’t disclose Vera’s age but just to say she has seen her 90th birthday and a few more!

Vera’s smile was euphoric and when asked if she enjoyed it, Vera replied, “Well my dear, I honestly never thought I would go swimming at all and I loved every minute of it! Can I go again?”

Yes Vera, you can go again!

Veteran's Breakfast

Three of our resident veterans from the Armed Forces attended the Veterans’ Breakfast Club organised by Cath Sharman and the Dolphin Pub in Melbourn.

Our gents chatted to different people about their experiences then and their lives now and everyone was so friendly and welcoming!

The breakfasts were absolutely delicious and everyone thoroughly enjoyed them with David adding, “This is the best breakfast I have ever had!” His plate was clean!

Thank you to Cath for organising the event and the staff of the Dolphin Pub for their hospitality too! Brian, David and Donald are very much looking forward to joining you next month and have been telling everyone all about the trip out!

Korean Wedding Presentation

At the end of last week we had a visit from Susan - a relative of our resident Brian, who gave a fascinating talk about her sons wedding in Korea.

Susan told us about the ceremony, some history of the country, clothes that are worn and customs too.

Our residents were absolutely fascinated and enjoyed the personal touch that Susan gave to her talk. She had a wonderful display of objects all linked to the wedding ceremony and beautiful photos of the day!

Thank you Susan for such an enjoyable afternoon from all of us here at Melbourn Springs.

Royston Museum Trip

Last week saw our fantastic Activities team organise a trip to Royston Museum with some of our male residents from our Gentleman’s Club.

The museum manager was on hand to demonstrate the interactive screen showing Royston Cave where we were able to look in detail at the drawings on the wall and move around it in 3D!

Brian was fascinated to see a printing machine, similar to one he used to use and explained to us how it worked.

David enjoyed sniffing the old bottles from the medicine chest and trying to guess their contents.

And now we are very much looking forward to welcoming a speaker from the Museum to Melbourn Springs with some artifacts so that all of our other residents can enjoy finding out about our local area too.

A special street party for a special lady

Our fantastic Activities Coordinators Denise and Siobhan accompanied resident Audrey to her very own street party where she once lived in Royston.

Lots of people were gathered and the Royston Town Band played as Audrey arrived at the party.

It was a very emotional time as Audrey was welcomed by friends that she hadn't seen for a while and to see her long time home.

Audrey was presented with a beautiful cake, colourful basket of flowers and a card signed by all the residents of the road she had lived in for all her life.

Audrey thanked them all for their kindness as we sang a rousing 'Happy Birthday'!

It was a wonderful afternoon and it was an absolute pleasure to be able to share it with Audrey and her friends.
