Activities at Milford House Care Home

The Activities Team at Milford House are dedicated to providing a range of stimulating activities for both groups and individuals, that promote both physical and mental wellbeing based upon resident's interests both past and present. As a member of the National Activity Providers Association (NAPA) the team are always striving to incorporate best practice into the array of activities on offer and to enhance their own skills through qualification with NAPA to NVQ Level 3 in Activities Provision. The team combine weekly activity favourites such as sherry mornings with special events, musical entertainments, slide shows, outings in our own mini-bus as well as interacting with local community groups such as Plain Arts Salisbury to showcase resident art and creativity and others who come into the home to interact with our residents. Milford House also benefits from a strong network of volunteers who support the Activity Team as they deliver their programme and who, along with friends and relatives, are always welcome to come and join in our sessions and outings.

Gale Louw

Activity Coordinator

Gale joined the Milford team in 2019, initially as a carer but has gradually transferred over to the Activities Team where she is now the full time Coordinator. Gale has a passion to create a comprehensive and inclusive programme of vibrant events for residents, family
members and friends to enjoy and, along with the rest of team, ensure that each resident is able to participate in meaningful activities tailored to their likes and dislikes.

Originally from South Africa, when not at work Gale loves nothing more than exploring the UK, catching up with family and friends, being creative across a variety of disciplines and keeping her eyes out for great activities and events she can bring back to the home for
residents to enjoy.

Life at Milford House Care Home

A World of Photos

Residents and staff at Milford House celebrated ‘World Photo Day’ by joining together to take photos that represented ’A Day in the Life of Milford House’.

With iPads and a variety of cameras at the ready, the photographers in the home were out and about all day taking a range of photos that represented a snapshot of our day.

We are going to put together a collage of our day which will show just how residents and staff spend their time and all join together to make Milford House a home for everyone.

A Downton Abbey Afternoon

Residents enjoyed a fabulous afternoon taking a virtual tour of Highclere Castle (aka Downton Abbey), narrated by the butler from the well-known series.

It was a fascinating tour delving into the history of this amazing building and the people who have lived there. There was so much to learn about, including the amazing discovery of Tutankhamun’s Tomb by the Earl in 1922.

The afternoon was rounded off by a ‘Downton Abbey Cream Tea’, where we have all our best china laid out in true stately home fashion to enjoy a socially distanced tea. We think Jim Carter the Butler himself would have been impressed!

This was a really popular event so we will be holding another session so that we can accommodate everyone who wants to attend.

Tackling the London Marathon

Working with our friends at Salisbury District Council, Milford residents have embarked on walking the London Marathon virtually!

The home has logged on to the walk which involves taking 61,565 steps, or 26.23 miles, starting in East London and finishing at Hampton Court Palace.

In between, we pass the landmarks of the Royal Observatory Greenwich, Tower Bridge, The British Museum, Palace of Westminster, Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, Kew Gardens and Richmond Park, all before arriving at the finishing post.

As we pass each landmark, we are arranging virtual tours so that we can visit these amazing sights on our way round.

Following our official opening of the walk, residents have embraced the challenge and, in the first week, have already walked a quarter of the course.

It’s a great way to get everyone involved in getting outside and we may be inspired to complete more walks – perhaps the Great Wall of China next!

Friendship Day

Residents and staff at Milford House have been celebrating Friendship Day.  Every resident received a card made in the home and cards were sent to friends and supporters of the home as a way of keeping in touch with everyone we haven’t been able to see.

We are particularly grateful for the support we have received from the local community who have delivered all sorts of things to the home to cheer everyone up and this is our way of showing how much all the support has meant to us. We hope to welcome everyone to the home at some point in the future to say thank you in person.

Technology to the Fore

Residents at Milford House are enjoying all the benefits that technology can offer during the current pandemic.

With visits outside the home not possible, we are enjoying a range of virtual tours. These include Stonehenge (pictured on screen), Salisbury Cathedral and Museum, Buckingham Palace, a range of art galleries and more!

Although not the same as actually being there, these virtual visits do offer some positive benefits: no journey to get there, no issues with the British weather, a tour time of our choosing and, of course, being able to have a cup of tea while ‘on tour’!

The other plus is that we can visit places that would be too far for us to go, and Buckingham Palace has definitely been a popular option. We continue to expand our range of visits and, next month, we are looking forward to a tour of Downton Abbey with the Butler, Carson, leading the way.
