Activities at Milford House Care Home

The Activities Team at Milford House are dedicated to providing a range of stimulating activities for both groups and individuals, that promote both physical and mental wellbeing based upon resident's interests both past and present. As a member of the National Activity Providers Association (NAPA) the team are always striving to incorporate best practice into the array of activities on offer and to enhance their own skills through qualification with NAPA to NVQ Level 3 in Activities Provision. The team combine weekly activity favourites such as sherry mornings with special events, musical entertainments, slide shows, outings in our own mini-bus as well as interacting with local community groups such as Plain Arts Salisbury to showcase resident art and creativity and others who come into the home to interact with our residents. Milford House also benefits from a strong network of volunteers who support the Activity Team as they deliver their programme and who, along with friends and relatives, are always welcome to come and join in our sessions and outings.

Life at Milford House Care Home

Almost All the Fun of the Farm

Almost All the Fun of the Farm

Residents had been due to pay a visit to Bourne Community Farm just up the road from the home for a talk and guided tour to meet the animals, all followed by a lovely cream tea. However, the British weather had other ideas and the day turned out cold, wet and windy and not at all suitable for a farm outing. But all was not lost – in liaison with Ben at the farm, we decided that he would come to us and give his talk – which was really interesting – all about how the farm got started and has been growing ever since. He even brought scones, jam and, of course, clotted cream for us to enjoy here – which we did with enthusiasm! It was disappointing not to be able to go, but we will pop along to visit the animals on a sunny day, so nothing has been lost.

Outdoor Inspiration

Outdoor Inspiration

Residents have been working on projects that bring the outside in, which reflect our own gardens that surround the home. Pictured here are two residents showing off some of the lovely work that has been produced: potato prints featuring acorns and oak leaves – the Barchester logo – and sun catchers using petals and leaves gathered from the garden. They are all on display in our conservatory and provide a lovely, colourful display and are a real talking point.

A Life on the Ocean Wave

A Life on the Ocean Wave

Residents at Milford House enjoyed a really special afternoon on board the M/V Alison MacGregor, sailing out from Hythe Marina around Southampton Docks.

On a warm and sunny afternoon, we cruised around some of the new marinas, deciding which expensive boat took our fancy, saw a tall ship from Oman, had the workings of the docks and all the surroundings explained to us and sailed alongside the dock where the Titanic was moored prior to her fateful journey. We saw the red painted bollards that she was moored to still in situ, which gave us an idea of just how large she was, unlike our much smaller craft.

With the help of our excellent crew, we made it safely back to our berth and journeyed home to Milford.

Continuing our theme of changing seasons, residents decided to redecorate and update the notice board in the conservatory with a flower/seasons style. With this in mind, we have created some really lovely and colourful flower posies that are really bright and cheerful and can be seen really clearly. Good job, everyone!

Seasonal Changes

Seasonal Changes

Here at Milford House, many residents have a close connection to the countryside and many have been keen gardeners, so reflecting the changes in season is important. With this in mind, we have been changing all the displays in our activities and communal areas to chime with the harvest activity that we see all around us. Residents have chosen quotes to reflect these changes and then decorated plates, which we have put around our mirror so that we can share our thoughts and feelings with everyone – and we are all rather pleased with the results!

Banishing the August Blues

Banishing the August Blues

Residents at Milford House enjoyed live entertainment by Chico, who sang for us. With his guitar and anecdotes of the music industry, Chico soon had us all singing along to old favourites and listening to some new songs that will surely become favourites, just like Chico himself! Let’s hope that for Chico’s next visit in September, the weather will be a little nicer.
