Activities at Mortain Place Care Home
Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.
Alex Leftley
I was working in the print trade when a friend of mine became very unwell and I had to find a nursing home for her. Due to the dedication of the staff, my friend had another 18 months and I was able to take her out after being house bound for many years.
I felt that I wanted to do a job that made a difference and became a carer. I went back to school and redone my GCSE,s and then went onto do my level 3 diploma and am always enhancing my skills and knowledge. I came to Mortain Place as a senior carer on Normandy Gardens and worked my way up to Community Lead. I have chosen to move to the activities team to help support the life enrichment programme and help improve the life experience’s of our residents.

Activities and Events Partnerships
As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies
Life at Mortain Place Care Home
Live entertainment
Residents were treated to live performance from Salvatore de Cocilis who gave an energetic rendition of some classic hits.
Salvatore is a firm favourite with our residents so his visits are always highly anticipated and the residents and staff love to have a sing along and dance while he is belting out classic after classic.
Chinese New Year
We had a very happy Chinese New Year throughout Mortain Place. Residents made a Chinese dragon which was proudly displayed in the Bistro while residents tucked into some authentic Chinese snacks and beer prepared by our wonderful kitchen team.
Big Garden Bird Watch
To help celebrate The Big Garden Bird Watch event, our residents ventured into the garden to hang up the bird feeders they made and then came back in to the warm and watched as the hungry diners came for a feed.
We spotted the usual suspects taking an interest and even watched the squirrels get involved.
Australia day
Residents helped us to celebrate Australia Day throughout the home.
While packs full of factoids, crosswords and word searches were shared with residents in their rooms, other residents enjoyed traditional Aboriginal colouring and painting.
For our residents living in our Memory Lane community, we had some Australian jokes and a quiz.
Making bird feeders
In preparation for the Big Garden Bird Watch, we have had a fun afternoon making our own tempting bird feeders.
We are hoping to attract some hungry recipients so that we can spot and identify them as they tuck in to their favourite snacks.
Burns Night Capers
Resdients had a lovely day and evening celebrating Burns nights this week.
Staff and residents at the home were involved in a number of activities such as poetry to mark the Scottish institution, including giving the time-honoured address to the ‘Great chieftain O’ the pudding’ race’ – the Haggis.
General Manager, Chris Turnbull, at Mortain Place, thought it was a perfect occasion to celebrate an evening steeped in age-old tradition as well as getting in a spot of Scotch whisky tasting, singing with a medley of Burns’ songs and a rendition of Auld Lang Syne.
She said: “Our residents have enjoyed a hearty meal of Scotch broth, Haggis with neeps and tatties all prepared by our stellar Chef, Mia."
One resident said: “I enjoyed acting out the part of the whisky-bearer and asking everyone to raise a dram to toast the Haggis.”
