Activities at Ouse View Care Home

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Ouse View care home in Fulford were treated to a photographic tour and talk about the era of ocean travel by V&A Dundee Curator, Charlotte Hale.  The presentation forms part of a series of six talks and virtual tours that V&A Dundee is hosting for Barchester Healthcare’s care homes and private hospitals across the UK.

V&A Dundee is Scotland’s design museum, it showcases Scotland’s outstanding design achievements and features world-class exhibitions alongside the permanent Scottish Design Galleries, and a changing programme of commissions, events and activities.  

To celebrate National Vegetarian Week, staff and residents at Barchester’s Ouse View care home in York were treated to an interactive virtual cookery demo courtesy of chef, Alex Connell, from Vegetarian for Life.

Chef Alex whipped up some tasty, healthy vegetarian snacks in a live, interactive cookery demo.  Much to residents’ delight, Ouse View’s head chef Eve Gooder had prepared the same recipes so that residents could try all the dishes. Residents sampled delicious, light and summery veggie dishes including Borlotti bean and dill pate, Greek fritters with Tzatziki and Coronation 'chicken' pastries. All finished off with a sweet and simple but totally yummy banana bread.

Staff and residents at Ouse View care home in York were celebrating being able to go on short excursions again as lockdown restrictions ease across the country.  Residents are now able to go on a short trip to outdoor spaces without having to isolate on their return.

Residents from Ouse View enjoyed a long-awaited trip out in the mini bus to York City Centre where they were able to see the Castle walls, York Minster, the City Church and enjoy a picnic full of cakes and treats and a well earnt cuppa-tea!

Pauline Hodgson, General Manager at Ouse View commented: “It is absolutely wonderful to be able to take our residents out for trips again.  We have all been waiting for this day and we are so thankful it is finally here.  Our residents have enjoyed all sorts of different entertainment during lockdown but nothing beats some fresh air and a change of scenery to blow away the cobwebs.”

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Ouse View care home in York were treated to an armchair work out courtesy of the Green Goddess, Diana Moran, and Shackleton’s furniture company, followed by a mindfulness session led by Shackleton’s Emma Raybould.

Diana rose to fame as a glamorous fitness guru on BBC’s Breakfast Time in the 1980’s and has made an outstanding contribution to improving the health and wellbeing of people in the UK. She now brings that experience to Shackletons as their Health and Wellness Adviser.

For Residents at Ouse View care home in York, the long awaited reunion with two family members has become a reality, as two people are now allowed to visit each resident in their bedroom at the same time.

There has been much anticipation of this moment by families and Residents alike.  Guidance was issued by the Government at the beginning of April and Barchester Healthcare, who run Ouse View care home, is proceeding with a safe and cautious approach to visiting. Strict protocols are in place with all visitors required to have a negative Lateral Flow Device test result before being allowed into the home, and infection control measures and social distancing in place for every visit.

Despite the need for testing and social distancing, it was still welcome news for so many residents and their family members to be able to meet in the comfort of their bedroom. Residents and their loved ones enjoyed getting together and catching up face to face.

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Ouse View care home in Fulford, York were treated to a virtual tour of the wonderful underwater world of SEA LIFE London Aquarium, hosted by Senior Curator, James Wright and his expert team.

SEA LIFE London Aquarium is home to more than 300 species and 4,000 creatures, including Gentoo Penguins, Sea Turtles and Seahorses, which are cared for by its dedicated team of 15 Aquarists. The shark tank alone is one million litres in volume and six metres deep and is home to five species of sharks – Sand Tigers called Bungle and Zippy, a Grey Reef Shark, Nurse Sharks, Tawny Nurse Shark and a shiver of Black Tip Reef Sharks as well as a Bowmouth Guitarfish called Betty.
