Activities at Spen Court Care Home
Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.
Angela Blackburn
My name is Angela and I am the Head Activities Coordinator here at Spen Court. I get so much satisfaction out of knowing I have made a difference to people’s days and have filled the home with a sense of community and happiness.
We feel it is important to build community connections and maintain our resident’s social interaction outside the care home.
We ensure we deliver a person-centered program of events and activities and build strong relationships with our residents, their families and friends.

Life at Spen Court Care Home
Gingerbread House Day
We love any excuse to get creative so when we found out it was Gingerbread House Day on December 12, we didn’t need any persuading to get cracking.
Our talented chef prepared a big batch of gingerbread for our residents, who then got busy decorating with icing, buttercream and edible glitter to make some of the glitziest gingerbread houses in town.
The gingerbread houses look really lovely and they are indeed delicious - what a fun way to spend the afternoon. And, we didn’t eat it!
Home celebrate Elf Day
Staff at Spen Court Care Home in Heckmondwike swapped their uniforms for costumes on National Elf Day (Friday December 2nd) in an effort to raise funds to help people living with dementia.
Launched by the Alzheimer’s Society and delivered direct from the North Pole, Elf Day was created to sprinkle some festive cheer on fundraising towards finding a cure for dementia. From stripy socks to head-to-toe elf outfits, anything goes – there’s snow better way to raise money to help beat dementia.
On the day, residents and staff at Spen Court were able to enjoy elf-themed games including best-dressed elf competition, Christmas tree decorating, bauble decorating and Christmas raffle as the team at the home donned their elfish apparel. The home managed to raise a total of £26 towards the cause.
An afternoon of song and dance
The residents of Spen Court enjoyed an afternoon of music. As the lyrics were displayed on the large screen to a number of bygone songs, residents got involved by dancing, singing and clapping along.
One Resident commented: “What a lovely sound, I’ve really enjoyed listening to some of my favourite songs.”
Cheryl Norman, General Manager said: “Everyone really loved the music. The room was filled with smiles and laughter as Residents joined in with the performance.”
Virtual trip to the Donkey Sanctuary
Across our services, Residents enjoyed a fantastic virtual tour of the Donkey Sanctuary Manchester. Residents were thrilled to meet the lovely herd of donkeys, including Henry and his best friend Tiny Tim and to learn more about their every day care. They were introduced to the sanctuary’s work and the impact they make to the lives of donkeys in need worldwide. The virtual experience was truly enjoyed by all.
Lest we forget
After our two minutes of Silence, We had a fantastic time painting poppies to display around our home. Today we wear our Poppies with Pride!
Pumpkin o'clock
It was 'Pumpkin o'clock' at Spen Court when we welcomed our friends from the Cooperative Nursery in Dewsbury for a little Halloween fun.
The lively group of 3 and 4 year old's made us smile, laugh, helped create a little mess with our pumpkin carving designs!
We loved every single second of it of this fun-filled morning and we are looking forward to them visiting again in December as part of our festive celebrations.
