Activities at Spen Court Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Angela Blackburn

Head of Activities

My name is Angela and I am the Head Activities Coordinator here at Spen Court. I get so much satisfaction out of knowing I have made a difference to people’s days and have filled the home with a sense of community and happiness.

We feel it is important to build community connections and maintain our resident’s social interaction outside the care home.

We ensure we deliver a person-centered program of events and activities and build strong relationships with our residents, their families and friends.

Elf Day

Staff at Spen Court swapped their uniforms for costumes on National Elf Day (Wednesday December 6) in an effort to raise funds to help people living with dementia.

Launched by the Alzheimer’s Society and delivered direct from the North Pole, Elf Day was created to sprinkle some festive cheer on fundraising towards finding a cure for dementia. From stripy socks to head-to-toe elf outfits, anything goes – there’s snow better way to raise money to help beat dementia.

On the day, residents and staff at Spen Court were able to enjoy elf-themed games including best-dressed elf competition, Christmas quiz, elf-bingo as the team at the home donned their elfish apparel.

Brenda Callaghan, a resident of the home said: “It is always a very festive day and the staff always make us laugh in their costumes. What a wonderful way to raise money for charity!”

Meeting the Reindeers

Across our homes we got into the Christmas spirit of things by joining a festive live virtual experience, led by Des and Kelly from Performing Pets.

Our residents were thrilled to meet the charming furry friends and get up close and personal with the reindeers.  We certainly learnt some interesting facts about the animals and had a fantastic time.

Home donate to local Foodbank

Spen Court care home in Heckmodwike contributed towards a donation to the Batley Food Bank with the generosity of team members, families and friends of residents.  Batley Food Bank is a local registered charity.  They are open 5 days a week Monday to Friday, currently 11.30am to 3.30pm providing food for people in need in Batley and the surrounding area.

They have helped many thousands of people since they were established in 2013 and continue to do so, thanks to the generosity of local people, organisations, community groups and businesses who donate both food and money to the charity.

Long service celebrated

Keri, administrator at Spen Court has received a prestigious long service award in celebration of working at Barchester for 15 years. Keri started in November 2008 and has worked with residents and their families to ensure that their needs have been met over the years.

We asked Keri what she enjoyed about working at Spen Court. Keri said "It's home from home being here, I enjoy doing my job aswell as working along side my colleagues and residents."

A trip down memory lane

Spen Court celebrated Remembrance Sunday. We started the day off with a performance by Rochelle Ayris where she sang hits from the 1940s and war songs. Residents from both floors enjoyed getting together, singing songs and dancing.

In the afternoon the residents enjoyed a quiz about Remembrance Day where they got some questions right and also learnt a lot! The residents in memory lane created art related to poppies which they thoroughly enjoyed.

Frsh Air Outing

Malcolm taking in the fresh crisp air of October as we went on a scenic walk down the Spen Valley Greenway.

Always plenty to see, people walking dogs, children on their bikes, wildlife.

It’s always a pleasant outing.
