Activities at Spen Court Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Happy 101st Birthday Edith!

Celebrations have been in full swing at Spen Court Care Home, as one of its residents reaches her 101st birthday in style.

Edith was joined by staff, relatives, friends and other residents as we sang Happy Birthday to Edith. A champagne reception was held at the home and guests enjoyed a special birthday cake made by the home’s chef Nick

Edith was brought up with 5 brothers and lived in Batley before coming to Spen Court, where she is enjoying a new chapter of her life.

The birthday girl celebrated with a family outing to Healds Hall in Liversedge. General Manager of Spen Court Care Home, Barchester added: “We’re delighted to be celebrating a truly remarkable woman as she reaches this amazing milestone. Edith is such a popular resident who always has an interesting tale to tell, and we look forward to hearing many more as she breaks into her 101st year.”

Don't worry, Beer happy!

You better beer-lieve that residents at Spen Court care home in Heckmondwike, were more than hoppy to raise a glass, and sample some top craft ales, bitters and lagers, in celebration of International Beer Day.

The activities team at Spen Court set up a pub trolly experience and brought in a range of brew-tiful British and International ales for residents to sample.  Residents and their visitors enjoyed a beer tasting in the garden/virtual tour of a local brewery/learning about the history of beer/a beer-based quiz whilst they sampled the different craft ales, bitters and lagers.

Barry Rochelle, a resident at Spen Court care home, commented: “I didn’t realise we had so many lovely local ales, it was fantastic to be able to enjoy a cold beer with my friends – you can’t really beat that now can you?”

Herstory of Mayfair

‘Herstory’ of Mayfair

Residents across our services had a fantastic time joining Mandy Morrow for a virtual walking tour to learn about the ‘Herstory’ of Mayfair. The Mayfair of Nightingales may be long gone but it still holds a 20th century charm. Birthplace to the late Queen Elizabeth II, home to one of WWII's most decorated female war heroes and a tale of a wealthy Aristocrat and one of France's favourite designers.

We were delighted to take a walk down memory lane and discover stories from one of London's most iconic areas.  The experience was truly enjoyed by all.

Walls Ice Cream

National Ice Cream Day

Residents across our homes had a fantastic time during a special live virtual event in celebration on National Ice Cream Day. Wall’s team took us on a great journey through history, sharing fascinating details about the brand since its launch in 1922. We learned about major innovations such as the introduction of Mr Whippy, Cornetto, Viennetta, Twister, and Carte d'Or.

Residents were treated to a singalong to Cornetto classic ads, an interactive quiz about fun Wall’s facts and best-of-all, an ice-cream tasting session. It was a delightful experience for everyone, especially our ice-cream lovers.

A dogs life

Across of homes residents had a fantastic time during a special live virtual event, led by Jennifer and Emily from Dogs Trust, the UK's largest dog welfare charity. Jennifer and Emily took us on a journey to discover the rich history of Dogs Trust and their facilities.

Using captivating video and photo footage, our residents were able to explore rehoming centres and learn more about the highest level of welfare offered there. It was a delightful experience for everyone, especially our dog lovers.

Pride Month

This June, staff and residents at Spen Court have been creating decorations, festooning the home with rainbows and enjoying the colourful celebrations from around the world. Lots of the festivities from different parts of the UK and from around the world are available to watch online and residents have had a fantastic time experiencing the different parades and carnivals on offer.

Pride Month takes place from June 1 to June 30 each year as a way to recognise the influence LGBT people have around the world. June was chosen because that is when the Stonewall Riots took place back in 1969.  Known as the ‘Mother of Pride’, it was Brenda Howard who coordinated the first LGBT Pride March, as well as sparking the idea for a week of events around Pride Day.  These events then developed into the annual LGBT celebrations held every June.
