Activities at Strachan House Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

G’day! My name is Natasha and I am the activities lead here at Strachan House. I am Australian born and bred, braving the dark and the cold here in Edinburgh to enjoy the beautiful nature and wonderful people! I have a background in team management and design. I have always loved working with people and have a strong interest in mental health and well-being, recently embarking on a psychology degree with an interest in specialising in Art Therapy. Floral favourites

To pay homage and celebrate the Chelsea flower show, our ladies soaked in the rich aromas and vibrant colours of both store bought, and foraged flowers and greenery from our beautiful garden. We had avid flower lovers, including one of our memory lane residents who spent many years as a florist! She showed us the ropes and helped other residents to make important compositional decisions. We also collected daisies and reminisced on our childhoods as we created daisy chain bracelets. Everyone was chuffed with the final outcomes and we now have gorgeous blooms dotted throughout the home.

Home present cheque to local charity

Strachan House care home in Blackhall recently presented Parental Advocacy and Rights (PAR) with a cheque for £800 to towards transport costs for this charity's disabled members to take part in their activities.

Parental Advocacy and Rights (PAR) started as a community group in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2015 meeting in the Serenity Café, a community hub for people in recovery from drugs and alcohol.  Mothers were constantly asking for support and help when their children were in the children protection system and they felt overwhelmed, often they did not have legal representation, did not understand procedures and processes and did not feel they were part of plans for their children.

Celebrating Cadbury's 200th Birthday

Residents across our services had a wonderful time joining Cadbury for an interactive virtual talk on their fascinating 200-year history.

Residents joining learnt interesting facts about the chocolate giant, shared memories, and reminisced about their favourite sweet treats.

It was a heart-warming experience filled with laughter, nostalgia, and plenty of chocolatey goodness!

Much loved nurse retires after 25-years

After almost 25 years of continuous service at Strachan House much-loved Nurse, Liz, also known as ‘Mother’ has decided to retire. Staff and residents at the home sent Liz off in style with French wine, flowers and a huge party with delicious food, lots of singing and a wonderful musician. Liz also received her 25 year gold pin for continuous service with Strachan House Care Home.

During her time at Strachan House, Liz has been a dedicated nurse, acting as a mentor for staff, passing down her knowledge with grace and patience. She has shown much care and compassion for others.

Virtual Quiz Time Fun

We had the delight of hosting a virtual quiz, morning tea and cultural exchange with our new friends at OSJCT Goodson Lodge in Wiltshire England!

We traded delicacies, Strachan house residents indulging in a delightful cream tea, tea cakes and of course accompanied by tea; whilst residents at Goodson Lodge enjoyed a little pre-lunch whisky (it’s never too early…), Iron Bru and shortbread.

It was fun going head to head, testing our knowledge and finding out more about one another's places of residence. We learnt so much and cannot wait for the next one!

Morning Tea Visit

Residents from Strachan House enjoyed a short minibus trip to our friends at Queens Manor where we joined in on their weekly morning tea!

It was so lovely to be surrounded by friends old and new, to sit and chat with others and share stories over a delicious high tea! We felt absolutely spoilt and loved our time spent together with friends.
