Activities at The Cedars Bourne Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

The Cedars Joins Barchester's Live Book Club Corner

We had a lovely time joining Mark Piesing for an exciting virtual event to discuss his book ‘N-4 Down: The Hunt for The Arctic Airship Italia’.

Our residents were thrilled to find out more about the book and the fascinating story of the world-famous exploring airship Italia, returning from the North Pole on May 24, 1928. The airship was struck by a terrible storm and crashed somewhere over the Arctic ice, triggering the largest polar rescue mission in history.

Intergenerational Playgroup for the young and old

The Cedars Care Home in Bourne host an intergenerational playgroup for residents and children from Busy Bees Nursery and Pre-School every Wednesday afternoon during term time. This regular activity has proven very popular with our residents and the children, who love to enjoy music, games and activities together.

The group also enjoy singing along with residents to their favourite nursery rhymes and playing parachute games or drawing together.

Home hosts Art Class

The Cedars Care Home, in Bourne invited local artist Claire Bishop, of Claire Bishop Studios’ to run a resident’s watercolour art class in the home. At the class, the eager residents were invited to learn to paint poppies with watercolours. The activity was accessible to all, with residents enjoying the chance to be creative and have fun in a relaxed and friendly environment. The hospitality team then provided all the participants with a hot drink and delicious homemade cake, to enjoy while all admired the beautiful artwork produced.

Cedars Fete and Family Fun Day

Residents and staff invited their families for lots of fun and games to celebrate all the promise of 2023. The Garden Lounge was transformed into a shopping centre; with stalls selling beautiful goodies including jewellery, decorative giftware and toys to the admiring crowd. Visitors were then invited to try their luck at the tombola and raffle.

Residents enjoyed spending time with friends and relatives, and members of the local community.  Head Chef Richard Parrott had baked lots of lovely cakes and savory treats to enjoy with a cup of tea or coffee, before trying to score high on our moving target game. This was met with much laughter as it was commented that ‘it’s not often we get to throw things at the staff!’

The Cedars’ Family Fun Day was a big success - they managed to raise just over £150 for their resident’s fund and, most importantly, everyone had a great time doing it!

Collective Worship with local School

Residents at The Cedars recently enjoyed a collective worship with the children from Bourne Abbey Church of England Primary Academy. The event, which took place on 16 January, welcomed the group of pupils aged between five and eleven, who did a wonderful presentation on the virtue of perseverance. They then invited residents to join them in a colouring activity, and to have a chat about their lives.

The pupil’s presentation was described as ‘wonderful’ by residents, who enthusiastically applauded the efforts of the children.

New Year Concert

Heavenly music rang out at The Cedars Care Home as the community came together to celebrate New Year’s Eve in style with a live harpist.

Staff and residents at The Cedars got in the spirit of the New Year by inviting harpist John Dalton to come and play a mix of music on his harp. With a repertoire of songs that included a waltz, swing, Spanish flamenco and 50’s rock; before inviting residents to sing to their favourite Christmas Carols. There was something to suit everyone! The group finished with a rousing rendition of Auld Lang Syne to end the afternoon.

Dorothy Payne, resident at The Cedars Care Home said: “It was a truly wonderful afternoon’s entertainment,’ whilst resident John Clingo said how wonderful the afternoon was and how much he enjoyed it. ‘I wanted to shake his hand’; he said.
