Activities at Tixover House Care Home
Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.
Nicola Blevins-Twose
Hello, my name is Nicola (Nic) and I'm the Activities Coordinator here at Tixover House.
My role is to enrich the lives of our residents by providing stimulating and person-centred activities, entertainers and outings. At Tixover House we offer something for everyone, including crafts, games, virtual visits to places of interest around the world, outings in the local area and parties. We also provide one-to-one time and sensory activities with residents who need more support. Getting to know our residents better is so important, and through regular family and friends meeting we can gain a greater understanding of their loved ones' interests and life prior to joining Tixover House.
I look forward to getting to know you, and your loved ones. 'Living life to the full' is my motto, and whatever your ability there is always something new to learn or try.

Life at Tixover House Care Home
Burns Night
our residents, families and friends have had today celebrating Burns Night here at Tixover House - our special guests Tracey, Jean and Malcolm joined our residents for a delicious lunch of cock-a-leekie soup, Sausage Stovies, and Caledonian Cream, all washed down with a wee dram! The traditional meal of Haggis, Neeps and Tatties followed by homemade Cranachan was served for dinner this evening, delicious!
Our friends from Barrowden’s Scottish Dancing Group joined us after dinner for a reel or two around the dance floor with their usual flair and panache, smiles all round.
School Days
One of our favourite past times in Memory Lane is reminiscing about our lives, and this week we’re focusing on our school days, which resonates particularly with one of our residents who also used to work in a school! So many happy memories were evoked and shared, reminiscing is a very special way for us all to connect with each other and the world around us.
Typically, a person with dementia is more able to recall things from many years ago than recent memories, so reminiscence draws on this strength. So many of our conversations and interactions rely on short-term memory. Reminiscence can give people with dementia a sense of competence and confidence through using a skill they still have.
Metal Detection Dogs
Across our services residents had a fantastic time during a special live virtual event, led by Emilia from Medical Detection Dogs.
Emilia took us on a journey to discover how the organisation began training dogs to support people with complex health conditions, saving their lives on a daily basis.
Using their amazing sense of smell, these dogs can identify odour changes emitted prior an episode and alert the person to take preventative action.
We were introduced to the wonderful dogs and the science behind the sniff. It was a delightful experience for everyone, especially our canine-loving residents.
High Tea Event
Against a musical backdrop courtesy of 'Boots and Strings' the Tixover House Care Home hosted a delightful High Tea event featuring cream tea and delicious snacks prepared by the home's kitchen team. The event was a resounding success, with residents, staff, and members of the local community coming together to enjoy an afternoon of decadence.
The event was held in the home's lounge area which was decorated with beautiful floral arrangements and elegant table settings. The guests were treated to a variety of scrumptious snacks, including cream scones with raspberry jam and a variety of cakes.
The cream tea was a particular highlight, with guests complimenting the quality of the scones and cream.
Long Service Award
A much cherished Nurse at the Tixover House Care Home in Grantham has received a prestigious Long Service Award in celebration of working at Barchester Healthcare for 20 years.
Jo Jepson, a much valued Nurse, started at Barchester in 2004 and has worked in dedication with residents and their relatives to ensure that their needs have been met over the years.
Adele Keenan, Employee Services Director at Barchester said: “I’m always pleased to hear stories about the long service of Barchester staff and am delighted Tina has achieved this milestone. It is dedication like this that ensures our residents are provided with a happy place to live.”
Intergenerational Fun
The magic of children. Our residents were absolutely delighted to receive a special guest in the home.
The grandson of our homes activities coordinator brought so much happiness to our residents from around the home. who enjoyed reading to him and giving and receiving lots of cuddles,
It is always an incredibly emotional experience to see the positive emotions which children bring to our residents.
