Activities at Waterside Court Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

The Great Big Green Community Event

What a brilliant day for a get-together, come and say hello, grab a slice of cake and have a chat to Maraya and Philippa at the Waterside Court pop up. Whilst visiting our stand The Great Big Green Community event today in Wallingford Market place, resident Anne who provided her collection of Royal scrapbooks to the Queen Elizabeth II exhibition in the Town Hall managed to view the full gallery of items on display, taking time to sign the book of condolence.

Out and About in the Community

The Waterside Court team have been out and about Wallingford, and its surrounding villages getting to know local businesses, and community support teams. Our mission is to make the local communities aware of all the exciting events open to the public at Waterside Court.

From weekly activities, to our monthly Dementia Friendly Café, and Carer Support Group to the ‘Don’t Dine Alone – Winter Warmers’ campaign that offers a warming bowl of soup and a soft roll to older people within our community feeling alone and in need of some company throughout the winter months.

All events and activities are complimentary, and give our residents, and staff the opportunity to meet and greet new friends. We hope to meet many more people at tomorrows' ‘The Great Big Green Week - Social Pop-up’ event being held in Wallingford Market Place from 10am – 4pm.

Come and say ‘hello’, have a slice of homemade cake and help us grow our friendship group

Happy Birthday to our 1st Resident

Please join us in wishing ‘Maureen’ a very happy 89th birthday, our very first resident at Waterside Court!

Maureen loves animals, especially Monty the Waterside Court PET therapy dog. She also has a super collection of teddy bears that sit proudly in her room, every one of them having its own particular place and story.

Having spent many years in Germany Maureen can converse in both English and German. She, like many of us loves her bed, and her special blanket, given to her by her daughter.

Her birthday coincided with a performance by Saxman ‘Alan Hook’ who serenaded Maureen as Chef delivered her homemade birthday cake. The smile on her face was infectious as we gathered together in song to celebrate her special day!

World Alzheimer’s Day

In celebration of World Alzheimer’s Day the staff and residents of Waterside Court gathered together for armchair exercise, song and dancing with 'Cody' and enjoyed hosting a cake sale with all monies raised going to the Alzheimer's Society.

Our luxury hamper raffle tickets are still on sale at the homes reception until 30th September to coincide with the end of Alzheimer’s Month.

At Barchester, we have been supporting families with pioneering dementia care in specially-designed, dementia-friendly Memory Lane communities since 1992. We strongly believe people living with dementia should enjoy a fulfilled and happy life, with specialist support to continue doing the things they love every day.

Remembering Queen Elizabeth II

In loving memory of the Queen, we decided to create our own Memorial Area to Her Majesty with candles and photos of the Queen. Whilst reminiscing with our residents, as they shared their stories, we were amazed to learn that ‘Anne’ and her sister had started their own scrapbooks dedicated to the Royal family and Anne still had them!

These books contain pictures and paper clippings from the 1950’s to the present day. They’re a unique portrayal of Her Majesty through the decades, so beautifully logged by Anne and her sister throughout the years.

We were fortunate to have the Mayor of Wallingford; Marcus Harris and Jennifer Green at Wallingford Town Council visit our display on Friday 16th September. They were so impressed by our residents’ collection they requested we place the scrapbooks on display within the Town Hall for all to see.

These alongside a dictated account of another resident; Isobel’s account of seeing the Queen’s Coronation are now part of the overall Wallingford 'Queen Elizabeth II Exhibition' at the Town Hall.

For many of our residents, the Queen represented comfort, hope and peace over the past seven decades of her sovereignty, and she will be sorely missed.

General Manager, Maraya Rabuka, said: “We absolutely had to mark this occasion, it is such an important event in all our history. The Queen gave so much of herself to us all over her 70 year reign. Anne and Isobel are delighted to have their memories part of this larger exhibition.”

Isobel, said: “I can still remember the Coronation, how young the Queen looked. She dedicated her entire life to serving us all and worked right up until the very end. She did us proud – we couldn’t have asked for a better Queen. I feel as though I have known her my whole life, she will be very much missed.”

Our home will be part of the Wallingford #GreatBigGreenWeek on Saturday 24th September and will be signposting visitors to the exhibition within Wallingford Town Hall as the owner of the scrapbooks; Anne is hoping to make a guest appearance to tell everyone about her prize possessions.

Making New Friends

We love seeing friendships form at Waterside Court. Here we have two of our gents enjoying a specially requested steak dinner for two, with wine and beer to compliment the meal.

Keith has been staying with us for respite and as he will be returning home soon, he and John wanted to celebrate their newly formed friendship with a special meal, freshly prepared by our kitchen team.
