Activities at West Oak Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Life at West Oak Care Home

Celebrating 101 Years

Here at West Oak, we celebrated a very special 101st birthday.  The weather was against us on this special day, but it didn’t stop the celebrations.

The birthday girl, residents and staff all enjoyed a nice slice of cake with, of course, a cuppa.

The Joy of Mechanical Cats

Mechanical cats have moved into West Oak. From the first moment they arrived they bought joy and happiness to our residents. The cats also enjoy the sunshine during our garden visits, as long as they have a comfortable lap to sit on.

Garden Visit

We have been making the most of September's warm weather. The sisters enjoyed their social distanced visit in the garden.

You can always tell when the sisters are visiting because of the laughter than can be heard in doors here at West Oak.

West Oak Celebrates Ivy’s 105th Birthday

Ivy, a resident at the home, celebrated her 105th birthday recently. Although not the party we had originally hoped for. Ivy loved seeing her family in our Bistro garden and on video call, on a glorious sunny afternoon. There was plenty of cake to go around thanks to our chef here at West Oak.

Ivy was showered with cards and gifts and received her second birthday card from the Queen. Ivy said she had a lovely time and that it was another birthday to remember.

Italian Day

West Oak held its first Cultural day; our Italian-themed day was a resounding success.

The day started with an Italian-themed quiz and word searches. The residents enjoyed the challenge and we all learnt something new about this amazing country.

Our chef put on a fantastic Italian three-course meal at lunch time. Everyone loved the lasagne or pizza and the classic Italian desert certainly lived up to its English translation of ‘cheer me up’, the beloved tiramisu.

After lunch, we relaxed to some beautiful music by Pavarotti, while being inspired by the decorations to reminisce about some wonderful holidays in Italy. Residents have some very happy memories, which they were keen to share. We also learnt a bit more about the Italian culture. We were surprised to learn of some of the Italian inventions that changed the world.

West Oak’s staff and residents loved our trip to Italy and are looking forward to our next cultural day with anticipation of another great day.

VE Day Celebrations

West Oak’s residents helped to set up for VE Day celebration, with ration books, flags, costumes and decorations. The day started with a zoom performance by West Oak’s favourite vintage singer, Kitty, who got everyone in the spirit for a day of celebrations, with her sing a long vintage songs.

Next came the good old fish and chips for lunch, served on newspaper printed grease proof paper, which was a real trip down memory lane, inspiring some interesting stories of days gone by. The residents and staff then joined in with the ‘Not Forgotten’ VE Day reminisces sessions on the big TV screens in the lounges, enjoying the different clips and songs of the good old days.

The residents and staff joined in with the Nations Toast at 3pm, in true British spirit
