Activities at Westvale House Care Home
Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.
Joanne Sherwood
Hi, I'm Joanne and I'm the Activities Co-ordinator at Westvale House! I joined the team in December 2023 and absolutely love my role. Getting to spend time with our residents every day and getting to know each of them more and more, is such a privilege.
I get to create and tailor our activities to the preferences of each individual resident, making sure they're all doing things they'll absolutely love, and that brings me and the rest of the team so much joy. Making each of their days special is what I believe my job is all about.

Life at Westvale House Care Home
Christmas Cheer at Westvale
Residents, relatives and colleague got into the Christmas spirit by throwing a festive themed party for its residents and their guests.
Westvale’s Christmas party was in full swing with festive foods, live music from vocalist, David John Dee and games. Residents enjoyed a feast of festive foods prepared by the home’s chef, and the afternoon was a great success as everyone sung, toe-tapped along!
General Manager, Carol Dwyer said: “We endeavoured to give each of our residents something that they could really be excited about in the run up to Christmas and have had lots of treats for the people who live here and their guests. I am pleased that we could hold something like this for our home and it is clear that everyone has really enjoyed the day!”
Live Music Performance
Residents of Westvale were treated to an afternoon of musical delight as they watched a very special live musical performance at St Philips School. Residents were delighted to be invited to watch the children from the schools choir perform a selection of festive carols as part of the homes busy social calendar.
General Manager, Carol Dwyer said, “Our residents had a wonderful visit to the school and sung along with the wonderful performers. We do our best to provide a wide range of activities and entertainment as part of the lifestyle enrichment programme for residents, and this was one was one of our favourites.”
Friends Reunited After 50 Years
Residents, Vera and Sheila meet up at Westvale House after many years apart! Veronica Rudd and Sheila Birchall were reunited after 50 years apart, both having recently moved into the home.
The ladies first met at Fletchers Dance Hall in Warrington in 1948. They used to meet up at the dance hall with their husbands every week. Vera said that she has realised how much things have changed over the years!
The ladies are so happy that their friendship has been renewed after all of these years. The ladies are looking forward to celebrating the run up to Christmas together.
Christmas Fete Brings the Local Community Together
Staff, residents, relatives and the local community came together at Westvale to enjoy a Christmas Fete that was held in the home’s grounds on Saturday 7th December.
Westvale hosted a variety of activities throughout the day, including a visit from Santa himself who delivered presents to everyone. Throughout the afternoon everyone was able to wander the various stalls to purchase those last minute gifts before enjoying musical entertainment and refreshments which were enjoyed by everyone who came to the event and the guests from the local community.
Afternoon of Sugar, Spice and All Things Nice
Residents of Westvale recently welcomed the children from local nursery, Stepping Stones, to help them decorate their Christmas cake in preparation for the home's Christmas Fair. Each resident with the help of their visitors chose the icing and which sprinkles they wanted to decorate.
It was hard not to eat as they worked – there was a choice of delicious toppings to choose from. They finished decorating just in time to enjoy some festive treats.
Residents often spend time decorating cakes as it’s an activity that can remind them of past hobbies and family life. Here at Westvale we always try and carry on with hobbies that each of our residents did in the past.
They spend time talking with each other and their loved ones about what makes them happy and incorporate that into daily life in the Home.
Festive Trip to Dobbies Garden Centre
Residents from Westvale visited local garden centre, Dobbies to admire the Christmas displays. As residents headed to the local garden centre to get in the festive spirit, the ladies admired all of the decorations and browsed the Christmas displays before heading for some lunch.
The ladies chatted over lunch and smiled as they watched children playing in the play area next to the café, one Resident commented that it was a lovely way to get in the festive spirit. Sarah Morley, Activities Coordinator said: “I am pleased the ladies have had a great day, we are looking forward to enjoying lots more festive activities in the run up to Christmas.”
