Activities at Woodhorn Park Care Home

Activities make up the most important part of all our days at Woodhorn park, so we ensure a variety of social events are available that reflect the interests of all the people we support. In our Memory Lane community, we have group conversations and regularly reminiscence about past experiences, which is something that people living with dementia really enjoy. Many residents love gardening, baking, outings, pet care and gentle exercise, which we provide, along with many other wholesome activities, as it is essential that life at Woodhorn Park is fun and active.

Life at Woodhorn Park Care Home

Dementia Awareness Week

Residents of Woodhorn enjoy senses and feelings that many of us take for granted. As part of Dementia Awareness Week, the home has created a pop-up sensory tent to test the 5-senses of smell, touch, taste, see and hear. The residents thoroughly enjoyed finding their way around the tent and exploring the various display items, especially the tasting table. A lovely time was had by all!

VE Day Celebrations

Residents of Woodhorn Park celebrated the 75th anniversary of VE Day in style. Residents took advantage of the good weather, enabling them to mark the milestone on May 8th, commemorating the end of the Second World War in their garden with a party.

Despite the coronavirus outbreak restricting visitors, residents managed to hold their own ‘street’ party in the comfort of their own garden while adhering to social distancing guidelines. The garden was decked out in red, white and blue decorations, and everyone enjoyed their time outdoors, sharing stories and enjoying slices of home-made cake and tea.

Staying in Touch

Residents and colleagues at Woodhorn Park were delighted to receive a beautiful gift from the family of a former resident, which was a small gesture thanking the home for the care shown to their mum, and to residents now during this challenging period.

Residents have been hard as work creating cards as a surprise. They have decorated the front and written personalised messages on the inside. They have also had great fun posing for pictures with our love message board, which will be printed and put inside the cards.

Residents have also been making use of Skype and Facetime so that they can video call their relatives – although some weren’t too sure about the new technology

Avon Calling

At Woodhorn Park, residents and colleagues were delighted to receive bags of treats from local Avon representative, Kasie, following a community appeal to recognise the hardworking staff at the home.

The home feels so blessed to have such an amazing support network from our community, with the local church, interest groups and community all supporting us, and it is now that the support we have received has shined brighter than ever. The efforts and extra steps that people have gone to is extraordinary and we are forever grateful.

Everyone is now looking forward to a little pampering!

Messages of Kindness

To combat loneliness and isolation, colleagues of Woodhorn Park reached out to the community as part of their extended social network to seek pen-pals of all ages. We reached out to nurseries, schools and members of the community to remain connected during the current coronavirus crisis.

Residents of the home were delighted to read their first delivery ny the pupils from Bishop’s Primary School, Thomas Bewick Campus and kind words from Lacey, daughter of the home's district nurse, Steph.

Residents were delighted to receive colourful pictures and letters delivered to the home. Thank you for adding a little colour and sunshine to our resident’s day and for your heartfelt messages.

Easter Eggs for Residents

The Easter bunny arrived early for residents of Woodhorn Park when they were surprised by the generosity of Shared Services Connected Ltd based in nearby Benton, who kindly delivered Easter eggs for every resident over the weekend.    Sarah Patterson, acting general manager and Anna Foster, activities coordinators were on hand to accept the beautiful hamper filled with a selection of eggs all shapes and sizes sure to satisfy any chocolate lover!

General Manager, Julie Bond said: “As always, are looking forward to Easter. It’s such a nice time of the year – the residents love all the colourful Easter eggs and we look forward to making Easter extra special for our residents during this challenging period for everyone, It will be an eggs-cellent day!”
