Activities at Highview House Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Aiden Wylie

Lead Activities Coordinator

Hello, my name is Aiden Wylie, and I am Head Activities Coordinator here at Highview House.  My job is to ensure a mentally and physically challenging and varied calendar of activities.  I want to involve all our residents in a warm and welcoming environment.

My career has been in education and I have lived in countries as diverse as Japan and Iraq, but in 2022 I came to Highview with the ambition of offering a range of activities, trips and entertainment which lead to lasting memories and experiences.

Activities and Events Partnerships

As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies

Life at Highview House Care Home

He's behind you!

Residents and staff were left rolling in the aisles after playing host to Theatre Presto’s travelling summer pantomime.  Residents were entertained (oh no they weren’t! / oh yes they were!) by a performance of “Oor Boabie: Brooned Aff Abroad”, based on the madcap adventures of classic Scots character Oor Wullie.

Residents from the home were joined by relatives and staff as they enjoyed the timeless tale full of magical twists, fun, laughter and adventures.  The performance marked the latest event in a long-running relationship between the Scorguie care home and the Edinburgh-based entertainers.

Residents get nautical

Residents from Highview House were plain sailing with a recent riverside cruise organised by the team at the home. The cruise, organised in conjunction with The Seagull Trust, started from the Tomnahuirch bridge, and sailed along the Caledonian Canal, taking in views of the waterway, yachts and Inverness-shire countryside.

The residents were serenaded by local musicians, and were fortunate enough to be accompanied by a pair of herons.   As one final treat, resident Frank Birss, 81, took the helm for the return passage.

Local carers scope coveted titles

Fergal Naughton and Mary Ellen McPhee have been crowned Dementia Champion of the Year and Learner of the Year respectively for the North East Division in the Barchester Care Awards and are both through to the national round of judging.

The Barchester Care Awards celebrate the staff who go the extra mile for the benefit of the 13,000 residents living in Barchester’s 261 care homes and private hospitals across the country. Categories range from ‘Registered Nurse of the Year’ and ‘Carer of the Year’ to ‘Dementia Care Champion’ and ‘Activities Coordinator of the Year’.

Foundation Cook Off

Staff and residents are celebrating because their wonderful Managing Director, Fiona Fagan, from Barchester’s North East and Scotland Division, has stepped completely out of her comfort zone to compete in the Barchester Charitable Foundation Cook Off 2024.

Fiona went head-to-head with the Managing Directors from Barchester’s four other divisions and cooked up a storm to raise a phenomenal £24,595 for Barchester’s Charitable Foundation which helps connect vulnerable people and those living with a disability to community groups in their local area by providing grants to improve mobility and quality of life.  Each year the Foundation distributes thousands of pounds to individuals, small community groups and charities across England, Scotland and Wales.

Willie Doig’s Country Show

Highview residents are big music fans, and one of the most popular is Willie Doig (and his dog, Poppy).  Willie’s blend of country and Scottish standards is a sing-a-long hit with all who attend. There’s nothing better than a good sing-a-long, and our residents particularly enjoy the nostalgia that comes from old familiar favourites.

Willie has a knack for hitting exactly the right note.  So much so, that Willie is now a familiar face at the home and residents, and visitors can look forward to seeing him perform at Highview throughout the year.

Eden Project

Residents across our homes had a fantastic time exploring the Eden Project virtually - an educational charity and visitor attraction based in Cornwall, featuring sprawling outdoor gardens and breathtaking biomes that house the largest indoor rainforest in the world.

During the session, residents who joined were reconnected with nature through their senses, memories and stories.  A big thank you to the community team at the Eden Project for the wonderful event.
