Activities at Lanercost House Care Home

Our dedicated Activities Coordinators offer a wide range of mentally and physically stimulating activities for residents and families to enjoy. There are regular outings in the minibus to places of interest, such as local cafes, garden centres and parks, as well as visits from entertainers, musicians and singers - and also from PAT dogs. We host various events, such as themed days, cheese & wine evenings, in addition to offering one-to-one activity sessions, including pampering, games and puzzles. Our activities staff strive to ensure residents participate in any way they can with activities that reflect their capabilities and interests.

Emily Stubbs

Head of Activities

I joined the Lanercost House family in June 2021 as a Care Assistant and then joined the activities team in May 2022.

I love bringing joy and fun to residents, relatives, and staff on a daily basis as well as planning and organising themed days, events, and celebrations.

I think the activities’ role is very important for Residents' well-being.  Whether they like to keep active with armchair exercises, join in with our weekly quiz or hop in the minibus for a day out - there is something for everyone.  I aim to ensure that each Resident's interests and hobbies are supported.

I am passionate about creative and sensory activities and I love to sing and dance together with Residents.  I love my job!

Life at Lanercost House Care Home

The Golden Apple Awards

Residents and staff at Lanercost House care home in Carlisle had an extraordinary afternoon of preparations for our activities coordinator Egle`s appearance on the finals of The Golden Apple Awards 2022. Together with Newtown Community Primary School we were nominated and got to the finals for the Best Community Initiative Category this year.

Some of our residents experienced the professional make up session and gave the advice of a glamorous walk on the red carpet.

We are wishing Egle and all the Newtown Community Primary school the best of luck tonight!

A massive thank you to talented make up artist Carley who found the time in her busy schedule and brought as a joyful afternoon.

Royal Botanic Garden

Our homes enjoyed a wonderful virtual tour of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh with Community Engagement Manager, Charlotte Walker, and Botanic Cottage Operations Co-ordinator, Laura Gallagher.

The residents were thrilled to learn more about the history of the beautiful Garden, which is now a home to an impressive plant collection from around the world.

Charlotte and Laura also gave a demonstration of making fresh herbal tea and were happy to answer our questions.  The virtual experience was truly enjoyed by all who joined.

Century celebrations

Celebrations have been in full swing at Lanercost House Care Home as one of its residents reaches her centenary in style.

Anne was joined by staff, relatives, friends and other residents in recognition of her landmark birthday. A Hawaiian themed party was held at the home and guests enjoyed live music and a special birthday cake, mocktails and fruit platters made by the home’s chef James. Anne also received more than 120 cards and warm wishes from all over the country from people wanting to help her celebrate her special day.

Anne worked as a comptometer operator in the courts and enjoyed golf and holidays with her husband before coming to Lanercost House, where she is enjoying a new chapter of her life.

When asked how she feels about turning 100, Anne said “it’s just like any other day!” and that the answer to a long life is “good, clean living and playing sports – I played golf, tennis and a bit of badminton”.

Remembering the Queen

In honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, we took the time to commemorate her and pay our tributes to the Royal Family.

In loving memory of the Queen, we created our own Memorial Area with candles and photos of the Queen, which staff, residents, families and friends can visit anytime. We created a book of condolences, which residents, staff and families signed.

For many of our residents, the Queen represented comfort, hope, and peace over the past seven decades of her sovereignty, and she will be sorely missed.
