Activities at Lochduhar Care Home
Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.
Sally Gilder
Sally has been in the care sector since 1998. Sally joined the Lochduhar team in 2018 as a care assistant.
Sally is very passionate about the care she provides and the welfare of the residents. Working as a care assistant Sally was able to get to know the residents wants and needs to provide excellent person centred care to each individual. Then in 2020 Sally found the opportunity to become Head of Activities. Sally feels that she provides a different side to herself to promote an active and inclusive lifestyle through her role as Head of Activities.

Life at Lochduhar Care Home
Getting Fruity
The team at Lochduhar have received a colourful bumper delivery of fruit boxes thanks to the kindness of their local Boots store in Dumfries, which has been delivered to the home. The fruit boxes contained a variety of healthy, tasty treats for the team to enjoy. Everyone at the home would like to offer their sincere thanks and gratitude to Boots for their kindness during the COVID-19 pandemic.
VE Day
Residents at Lochduhar celebrated VE Day on Friday 8th May. This date marked 75 years since the end of the Second World War. It brought back lots of memories for our residents and gave them a chance to share their stories with others. They had a good singalong to the famous Vera Lynn, Glenn Miller and Frank Sinatra!
Residents enjoyed refreshments and delicious homemade cream buns. Residents' faces lit up when an ice cream trolley went round the home. They could come and collect an ice cream cone with a flake and sprinkles!
Egg-stravaganza
The Easter bunny stopped by at Lochduhar thanks to the team at nearby Tesco, who donated a supply of chocolate Easter eggs for all to enjoy.
Gillian Ward, Acting General Manager, was on hand to accept the delivery, which was filled with a selection of eggs of all shapes and sizes that are sure to satisfy any chocolate lover! Any sweet tooth was truly satisfied.
Thank you, Tesco, on behalf of all of us here at Lochduhar!
Green Fingers
Finally the sun has arrived at Lochduhar! The residents have been making full use of the garden area and have been busy. We were lucky enough to get lovely plants donated from our local garden centres. The residents have enjoyed helping us plant these to brighten up the garden for all the residents to enjoy.
Manager, Gill Ward said “We were over whelmed by the generosity and kindness of our local community. We got such a lovely range of plants and orchids for around the home and resident’s rooms. It has certainly brightened up the home and the residents can’t wait to spend more time outside!”.
Community Spirit Brings Local Delivery
Residents and colleagues at Lochduhar were delighted to answer a call to accept a ‘special delivery’ from their local Tesco store who kindly donated a hamper of goodies to help keep our residents occupied during the current coronavirus crisis. residents and colleagues have been overwhelmed with their generosity with a trolley overflowing with items from DVD’S, puzzle books, games, biscuits, Easter crafts, colouring in books, pens, paper, playing cards, Easter bonnets and lots more!
Tesco’s have encouraged the home to reach out if they need anything else. On behalf of Lochduhar, residents and colleagues would like to pass on their gratitude for being considered at this time of uncertainty and hope everyone stays safe and well. Such a nice gesture thinking of us care homes and everyone joining forces to keep the community spirit together!
Messages of Kindness
To combat loneliness and isolation colleagues at Lochduhar reached out to the community as part of their extended social network to seek pen-pals of all ages reaching out to nurseries, schools and members of the community to remain connected during the current coronavirus crisis.
Residents were delighted to receive colourful pictures delivered to the home from members of local primary school who have visited the home regularly until the current restrictions were put in place.
Thank you for adding a little colour and sunshine to our residents day and for your heartfelt message. One resident said “It was very touching to receive such nice letters from the children”, whilst another said “The pictures are lovely, bless them all”.
It is amazing how a simple letter, short story, poem or even a photo or drawing can brighten someone’s day. The residents of Lochduhar will then reply as part of our busy social activity sessions.
We are happy to receive things via post which can be sent to directly to the home or you can email us directly to lochduhar.activities@barchester.com.
