Activities at Meadowbeck Care Home

Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Tina Holmes

Lead Activities Co-ordinator

Hi, I’m Tina, and I am the Activities Coordinator here at Meadowbeck.

I began working at the home as a Care Assistant in 1999. In 2014, I changed my role to Social Support Worker, which I enjoyed, as it involved supporting residents at Meadowbeck in their daily lifestyles.

I then became the Activities Coordinator in May 2017. I love working with our residents and getting to know them and their families. In addition to supporting them maintain an active lifestyle I always ensure to personally get to know each resident when they move in with us to support them in the continuation of any hobbies or interests the might have.

Life at Meadowbeck Care Home

Cheese and Wine

We were delighted to welcome our residents, relatives and friends in the local community in to our home to join us for our latest cheese and wine event.

Everyone enjoyed a selection of delicious cheeses and fine wines to suit their required taste whilst they were entertained with live saxophone music played by the very talented Clare.

We had a fantastic evening with lots of singing and dancing.

Come sing!

Residents across our homes and hospitals had a fantastic time with vocal coach Dan Cooper from Biiah as he led an amazing sing-a-long session for residents to enjoy.

Residents who joined the event were able to learn different techniques as they sang the famous ‘I Can See Clearly Now’ by Jimmy Cliff and ‘Here Comes the Sun’ by The Beatles.

Across our homes there were smiles and laugher all around. The session was such a success and was great for the mind, body and soul.

Easter Cake Competition

Excitement is running high at the Meadowbeck Care Home in Osbaldwick, York where residents and staff have been cooking up a storm to enter parent company Barchester Healthcare’s Easter Cake competition.  Details of the competition were announced earlier this year and the home has been busy coming up with, what they hope, will be a winning design.

The competition is being run by Barchester Healthcare across its 250 care homes and private hospitals so the home has some stiff competition to beat. Pride is at stake as chefs and residents at each of the homes across the country battle it out.  Judging will take place just after Easter and the winning cakes for each of Barchester’s divisions will be announced at the end of April.

Staff and residents at the home put their heads together and donned their aprons to come up with a scrumptious cake that they think encapsulates the themes and flavours of Easter.  Meadowbeck’s fabulous cake was created by Denise one of our talented Kitchen Assistants, created the chick-tastic Easter cake filled with a delicious jam filling.

Inside the Factory

We had a brilliant time across our services with Harrogate Skills 4 Living as they took us on a wonderful virtual visit to their Harrogate Chocolate Factory.

Residents were thrilled to discover details about the chocolate-making process and the fascinating journey from bean to bar, all while enjoying some delicious sweet treats.

The Factory aims to employ people with learning disabilities and autism, involving them in all parts of the process, from sorting and roasting the beans to packaging and sales. The experience was truly enjoyed by all who joined this event.

Beat the Clock

We continue to celebrate a varied life enrichment programme and across our services we linked up with other Barchester care homes and hospitals up and down the country for some interactive Beat the Clock games.

Our residents truly enjoyed solving word puzzles, conundrums and mathematical problems as part of Barchester’s very own game show series.

Everyone who joined had a fantastic time and enjoyed some friendly competition.

Vera Lynn's Birthday

The Meadowbeck Care Home in Osbaldwick, York was transformed into a 1940’s tea dance to mark Dame Vera Lynn’s birthday on March 20th.

The home welcomed singer, Nikki Humberstone who performed a melody of Vera Lynn’s classics.

Our talented team baked a wonderful array of cakes and biscuits washed down with pots of tea and the home was decorating with bunting to celebrate the occasion.

Singer and songwriter, Vera Margaret Welch, was born in East Ham in 1917.  She later adopted the stage name Vera Lynn, borrowing her grandmother’s maiden name.  Her music and performances were very popular and helped raise morale during the Second World War, earning her the nickname the Forces’ Sweetheart.  Her songs inspired both troops abroad and civilians at home and became symbols of resilience and hope.  She died in June 2020 aged 103.
