Activities at Melbourn Springs Care Home

Melbourn Springs Care Home was full of wagging tails and smiling faces as it hosted its first-ever community dog show on Friday, 13th September. The event brought together residents, families, and local visitors for an afternoon of fun, laughter, and four-legged charm—all in support of All Saints Church, Melbourn.

Held on the care home grounds, the show featured a variety of light-hearted competitions including “Waggiest Tail,” “Best Trick,” and “Most Handsome Hound.” The judging panel included two of our own residents, Pam and Audrey, alongside Elizabeth Freeman, Deputy Mayor of Melbourn, and Lisa Thompson from Arthur Rank Hospice. Their thoughtful choices and warm presence added a special touch to the day.

One resident shared, “It was the best afternoon I’ve had in ages. I used to have a spaniel, and seeing all the dogs brought back such lovely memories.” A local visitor added, “It’s fantastic to see the care home so involved with the community. Everyone was smiling, and the dogs were clearly loving the attention. We’ll definitely be back next year.”

The event also featured a raffle and refreshments, with all proceeds going to All Saints Church in Melbourn and Holy Trinity in Meldreth. The generosity of attendees and donors made the day a meaningful success.

At Melbourn Springs Care Home, we believe that meaningful moments are the heart of great care. That’s why we were thrilled to receive a Memory Box from Boots UK—an inspiring initiative designed to support people living with dementia.

Filled with nostalgic treasures from decades past, the Boots Memory Box for dementia care homes includes vintage toiletries, familiar packaging, and sensory items that evoke powerful memories. As our residents explored each item, the room came alive with laughter, storytelling, and heartfelt reflection. Everyday objects became gateways to cherished memories—from childhood routines to special family occasions.

We were also delighted to welcome Donna, a close family member of one of our residents, who joined in the experience and helped spark even more conversation and connection. Her presence added warmth and familiarity, making the day truly unforgettable.

One resident summed it up beautifully: “I hadn’t seen a powder tin like that since I was a girl. It reminded me of getting ready for dances with my sisters. We’d all be giggling and fussing over our hair. It brought it all back.”

At Melbourn Springs Care Home, we believe that joy can trot in on four legs — and recently, it did just that when Gary and Jimbob the alpacas paid us a visit! These gentle, woolly guests were an absolute delight, charming everyone from our residents to their families and our dedicated staff.

The atmosphere was electric with laughter and smiles as Gary and Jimbob made their way through the home. Residents had the chance to stroke, feed, and spend time with them — and the emotional impact was immediate. Encounters like these aren’t just fun; they’re deeply therapeutic. Animal visits can help reduce stress and anxiety, spark cherished memories, and encourage meaningful social interaction, especially for those living with dementia.

Our Acting General Manager, Vimu, shared:

“It was such a joy to see the happiness that Gary and Jimbob brought into the home. Our residents loved meeting them, and moments like this make a real difference to wellbeing. We look forward to welcoming them back again in the future.”

This visit was part of our ongoing commitment to creating meaningful experiences for our residents. Whether it’s alpacas, exotic animals, or community events, we’re always looking for uplifting ways to enrich daily life and build connections that matter.

Sue from our church made a lovely visit to us where she shared Holy Communion with the residents.

It was a gentle and meaningful time together. Some gathered in the lounge to join in prayer, while others received communion in their own rooms. Alongside the service, Sue spent time chatting, listening, and sharing smiles – something that meant a great deal to everyone she met.

For many of the residents, having communion brought a real sense of peace and a reminder that they are very much part of our church family, even if they can’t be with us on Sundays.

We’re so thankful to Sue for her kindness and for carrying the love of our church into the wider community.

Our Summer Bash was a huge success and brought together residents, families, friends, and staff for a truly memorable day. The sun shone brightly, creating the perfect backdrop for an afternoon filled with laughter, music, and community spirit.

Guests were treated to live entertainment that had toes tapping and hands clapping, while the delicious aromas from the BBQ tempted everyone to tuck into freshly cooked summer favourites. Alongside the food and music, a range of stalls offered plenty to browse and enjoy, from sweet treats to handcrafted goods, adding to the vibrant, fair-like atmosphere.

Most importantly, the event created special moments for our residents, who delighted in spending time with their loved ones in such a joyful, relaxed setting. Smiles, stories, and shared experiences made the day extra special, and we are so grateful to everyone who came along to celebrate with us.

It was a wonderful way to make the most of the summer sunshine, and we’re already looking forward to doing it all again next year!

We proudly welcomed Rob Allmey, Leading Operations Manager based at Stevenage Ambulance Station and serving East and North Hertfordshire, for an enriching afternoon of discussion and connection with residents.
Rob’s visit was part of his broader mission to educate the wider community about the role of paramedics, appropriate use of emergency services, and pathways into careers within the ambulance service. His approach is rooted in accessibility and open dialogue — and his visit to Melbourn Springs reflected just that. Rather than a formal presentation, Rob spent the afternoon sharing stories from his experience and responding to residents’ questions in a relaxed and engaging setting.
Reflecting on the afternoon, Rob commented, “It’s a real privilege to meet residents in a relaxed setting, where they’re leading the conversation in their own home, rather than during an emergency situation.”
Residents found the visit enlightening and thoroughly enjoyable:
•    Beryl shared, “Rob was incredibly engaging and easy to listen to. He answered all our questions with such patience and clarity — it was a joy to learn from him.”
•    Audrey reflected, “Meeting Rob was absolutely lovely. Hearing directly from someone working on the frontline of the ambulance service made the experience feel so real and insightful.”
•    Margaret remarked, “I found it fascinating to learn how closely the three main emergency services collaborate as a team. Rob’s passion for supporting young people into careers and helping them progress really struck a chord with me — it’s encouraging to know they have such opportunities.”
Residents are already looking forward to Rob’s next visit — when he’ll be bringing along an ambulance for a hands-on look at the life-saving equipment and tools used in emergency response.

Wild Guests Bring Joy to Residents

Residents had an unforgettable afternoon when Safari Stu visited with some very special guests — including a snake, tarantula, tortoise, hedgehog, skunk, and chameleon!

It wasn’t just fun — interacting with animals boosts mood, reduces anxiety, and sparks conversation. Residents got hands-on, stroking, holding, and learning about each creature, creating laughter, curiosity, and memories to last a lifetime.

One resident said: “I never thought I’d hold a snake at my age — it’s something I’ll remember forever!”

At Melbourn Springs Care Home, we’re all about enriching daily life with engaging, therapeutic experiences — and today’s wild visit was a perfect example!

Residents were treated to a wonderful afternoon of live music, thanks to the talented duo KJ and Catt. Their uplifting songs had everyone tapping along, singing, and smiling, creating a warm and joyful atmosphere throughout the home.

The performance was more than just entertainment — it brought residents together, sparked happy memories, and added a truly special touch to the day. KJ and Catt’s music reminded everyone of the simple joy of sharing songs, laughter, and good company.

The home was awash with colour, rhythm, and joy as residents, staff, and guests came together to celebrate Indian Independence Day in a truly unforgettable way. The highlight of the day was a captivating dance performance by Ragini from Antarang Wellbeing, whose graceful movements and expressive storytelling brought the spirit of India to life.
Ragini’s performance, rooted in classical Indian dance traditions, mesmerised the audience and sparked heartfelt conversations among residents about heritage, freedom, and the beauty of cultural exchange. Her presence added a soulful dimension to the celebration, reminding us all of the power of art to connect generations and communities.
A Feast of Flavours 
No celebration is complete without delicious food, and our Indian Independence Day was no exception. Residents and staff tucked into a mouthwatering spread of authentic Indian dishes, from fragrant curries and fluffy naan to sweet treats like gulab jamun. The aromas, spices, and flavours added an extra layer of joy to the day, sparking smiles and satisfied sighs all around.

Events like these not only honour important cultural milestones but also foster a sense of belonging and joy. Ragini’s visit was a beautiful reminder of how dance and music can uplift spirits and spark connection.

Fortnightly Visits from Rusty the PAT Dog
As part of our commitment to exceptional care and wellbeing, we’re proud to welcome Rusty, our friendly Pets As Therapy (PAT) dog, to the home every two weeks.

Rusty’s visits are more than just enjoyable – they play a valuable role in supporting residents’ emotional, social, and physical wellbeing. Interacting with therapy animals has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure, and encourage relaxation. For many residents, Rusty’s presence sparks positive memories, inspires conversation, and creates meaningful moments of connection.

Rusty’s regular visits are just one example of the enriching experiences we provide, helping residents feel engaged, supported, and truly at home.

The residents at Melbourn Springs were willing the England women's squad to win on penalties against Spain. Fortunately for them England won on penalties and were triumphant. Residents were in anguish throughout the match, but were then able to celebrate the night away along with the whole country. 

A fantastic win for the England team, meaning they have now won this tournament an unprecedented two times!! Congratulations!! C'mon England!!

At Melbourn Springs we know that being able to continue lifelong hobbies or interests is a key part of our resident's identities, and we make every effort to encourage and support each resident to be able to do so. 

Residents love our gardening club and being in the outdoors with nature.

Residents at Melbourn Springs love the animal therapy sessions that our dedicated Activities Team organise monthly. As one of the foundations of our Life Enrichment program, we know that animal therapy can help reduce blood pressure and improve overall cardiovascular health. 

Our residents had great fun feeding "Bertie" the Shetland Pony, and we cant wait for him to come back.

Some of our residents here at Melbourn Springs enjoyed an afternoon in the sunshine with a trip out to the Melbourn village fête. They took a look around the many stalls offering different things to buy & enjoyed looking at the old vintage cars on show. 

Then sat down to enjoy a cold drink and an ice cream. A very enjoyable time had by all. 

Congratulations to our Jessie on her 100th birthday. She was joined by her ever-loving husband Maurice, close friends and family. They all enjoyed food, drink, a beautiful cake & spent the afternoon reminiscing of happy memories spent with Jessie over the years gone by.
