Activities at Melbourn Springs Care Home

Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is a major focus of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat will always be welcomed.

75th VE Day celebrations

Melbourn Springs residents and staff celebrated the 75th VE Day anniversary by gathering together at 11am for a two minute silence followed by a delicious themed lunch including Lord Woolton Pie, Sherry Trifle and a superb commemoration cake!

One of our residents even joined a virtual tour of the Churchill War Rooms in London and the day rounded up with a special toast at 3pm to honour those heroes who gave so much.

The end of World War Two is a reminder that we have got through difficult times before in this country and we will again - we will always remember them today and always.

National Star Wars Day

Melbourn Springs had a very special visitor on National Star Wars Day as Luke Skywalker dropped in to see our residents and team. Our chef Annie baked a delicious chocolate cake with strawberries for our residents to enjoy and thankfully Luke was on hand to slice it with his Lightsaber! There was lots of smiles and laughter as Luke departed saying, "May the 4th be with you!" and one resident asking him if Yoda will pop up next year?!?

Community Bear Hunt & Rock Hide and Seek

Melbourn Springs residents have been busy producing their very own colourful window display to join the community support for all the amazing care staff and NHS workers who are working so hard for the people in this country.

We have had lots of lovely comments from passers-by, including many from children who have been busy on their community Bear Hunt looking for our Melbourn Springs Bears. There is an official checklist and the idea is for children to be motivated to go outside and for the younger children to learn their numbers.

Melbourn Springs is also part of the community 'Rock Hide and Seek'. Our colourful home rock is somewhere in the village and due to covid-19 it has been advised not to touch the rocks - just take a picture next to it and share the photo to the Facebook group.

Lets see how far that Melbourn Springs Rock travels!

Melbourn Springs officially opens

We are thrilled to announce that Melbourn Springs Care Home officially opened its doors on 21st April 2020.

The home was due to hold a red carpet launch with 200 guests from the local community but in light of current government restrictions staff raised a glass and cut the cake on the 75 bed home. A celebration for the community and friends of the home will be scheduled at a date later in the year.

Preparations are under way to welcome the first 10 residents who are expected to move in next week and the home is playing a key role in supporting the health care needs of the region at this time.

General Manager Karen Allen said, “What a very special moment for us all here at Melbourn Springs - the home is absolutely stunning! I feel very privileged to have been part of this amazing project and look forward to being able to throw the doors open for everyone to see as soon as it is safe to do so.”

The home’s marketing suite had been open for community events and as a community hub but all Barchester homes are currently closed to visitors as part of the Covid protocols to keep staff and residents safe.

It took 130,000 bricks, 45,000 concrete blocks to create the three storey home which is part of the new housing development in Hyacinth Drive. The home also has 338 solar panels making it one of the greenest energy efficient buildings in the local area too!

Home Services Advisor Dan Amis, who has been working in Melbourn for over a year to establish the home as a key part of the local community said: “I really cannot believe that we have reached this milestone and our beautiful home is now open! It really does not matter that we could not have a big event - the most important thing is being able to support our vulnerable loved ones who are struggling at home and looking to us for support and care during these unprecedented times!”

Staff have been absolutely overwhelmed by the positive response from all of the neighbours and local businesses and are really looking forward to hosting regular events once restrictions are lifted. For more information about Melbourn Springs or to book a virtual tour please contact the home and one of our friendly team will be happy to assist you.
