Activities at South Grange Care Home

Our specialist activities staff are committed to organising a mix of activities and events for residents and the local community to get involved in, including trips out to local places of interest in our minibus and visits from entertainers and musicians. It is important to us that each individual who we support can get as much from these as possible, so we try our best to arrange activities that reflect their interests and capabilities as best as possible, and encourage them to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can.

Life at South Grange Care Home

Queen's Jubilee

Excitement has been running high at South Grange in Monifieth where residents and staff have been busy making Jubilee-themed decorations and baking up a storm of red, white and blue cakes and pastries with the help of head chef Bernard in preparation for the Jubilee.

Staff and residents at the home put their heads together and came up with a plan for their celebrations fit for a Queen.  Over the bank holiday weekend the home held a Street party with a virtual concert, Jubilee-themed quiz and a singalong to wartime classics.  The whole home came together to celebrate our longest reigning monarch and reminisce about what she means to each and every one of us.

Star of Nimrod

We had a lovely time joining Graham Whitlock for an exciting virtual event to discuss his book ‘The Crystal Palace Chronicles: Star of Nimrod’.

Our residents were thrilled to find out more about the book and the fictional character Joe, who went on a rollercoaster adventure travelling back in time to the heyday of Victorian Crystal Palace.

Everyone had lots of fun during the virtual talk, as Graham took them on a clever and hilarious adventure. A great time was had by all.

Armchair travels to Vegas

Residents at South Grange travelled to ‘sin city’ as part of their armchair travels, with staff transforming the home into this bustling metropolitan city of Las Vegas.

Where the neon lights of Las Vegas’ infamous strip shine bright 24/7. Where the Mojave desert heat can be all-consuming and the sound of the chips being played in the many vast casino floors

Residents were treated to a morning in the casino where they placed their bets and were able to play blackjack, roulette and the tables being manned with in-house croupiers, known as the activities team day-to-day.

Whilst playing the tables residents were served mouth-watering mocktails, Cocktails and Prosecco.

Broughty Ferry

Our Seven Arches Unit had a lovely lunch outing this week at Broughty Ferry. They had their lunch in the Glass Pavilion at the waterside. They took advantage of the weather and walked along the seafront.

A trip to the football

Residents from South Grange enjoyed a trip to Arbroath where they were able to watch the Arbroath v Morton Game and enjoy having hot pies whilst watching the match.

David Bennett and David Clare, residents at South Grange, said: “Staff here have been brilliant putting on all kind of different events to keep us entertained, we have been very well looked after but it is lovely to be able to go and see the match, especially as Arbroath won.  It really does feel like life is starting to get back to normal.”

Book corner with Henry Slator

We had a lovely time joining Henry Slator for an exciting virtual event to discuss his book ‘Conversations at the Pond’.

Henry had an unusual writing journey, which many of our residents found inspiring, he underwent chemotherapy in early 2020, which allowed him to rediscover his light-hearted outlook on life by imagining conversations with creatures in and around his large garden pond and adding buckets of fun.

The entertaining Conversations at the Pond, with its mass of colourful illustrations, took our residents along his journey, they felt inspired, cheered and loved hearing all about Henry’s experiences.
