Activities at Southerndown Care Home

Our teams are trained to enrich the lives of residents through stimulating the mind, body and soul, and taking the time to learn about each person to ensure everyone receives support that adds enrichment to their life.

Our specialist activities staff are committed to organising a mix of activities and events for residents and the local community to get involved in, including trips out to local places of interest in our minibus and visits from entertainers and musicians. It is important to us that each individual who we support can get as much from these as possible, so we try our best to arrange activities that reflect their interests and capabilities as best as possible, and encourage them to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can.

Activities Co-ordinator

I have worked at Southerndown since 2013. I enjoy providing various activities for our residents with the team, such as gardening groups, trips out in the mini bus around the Cotswolds, quiz days and entertainment performances. Amongst the many things we enjoy doing, part of my role within the home is to ensure all residents are provided the purpose in life to fulfil day to day stimulation, whether that be together, or creating individual activity to those that prefer.

Activities and Events Partnerships

As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies

1 Cake is not enough!

It was a 93rd Birthday to remember for Sheila, who was gifted a total of 3 Birthday Cakes! One was baked by our team at Southerndown which we love doing for all birthdays in the home, Sheila's family also brought in a cake to celebrate, and our residents wanted to bake Sheila a cake at the weekly Baking Club. There was so much choice but everyone was happy to get stuck in!

A Special Visit

We were very lucky to receive a personal visit from Firefighter Owen Wilson who wanted to come and meet David. Having once been part of the Moreton in Marsh Fire Service College, the world- leading training centre for emergency services, David really appreciated the visit from Owen to talk about all things emergency!

Getting our steps in

"What a delight, it makes me happy” said a resident at Southerndown Care Home. We had walked around the grounds in the lovely warm sun. Admired a flowering Clematis then enjoyed a cup of tea and coffee on a sunny bench in the courtyard. Smiles all round at Southerndown Care Home

Celebrating our Resident Author Colin

Colin, a British author and a previous physicist has written many short stories with a twist, but he is most well-known for his popular science stories. He is an expert in mathematical paradoxes and a lover of mysteries. Living in Oxford, he had frequently contributed to university life through giving talks at the Oxford University, but now resides at Southerndown Care Home. Each week Colin runs a book club in the home for the residents and staff and treated us all to a reading from his published book “The curios case of Mrs Hudson’s cat” which he wrote and had published in 1997.

Gardening Club

We are making the most of the dry weather (when we have it) here at Southerndown by continuing to work together on getting our garden and beds prepared for summer. We popped down to the garden centre to stock up, before heading back and getting busy  busy with the front of our home and planting some beautiful pinks. Great job everyone!
