Activities at The Spires Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Angie Smith

Activities Coordinator

Hi, my name is Angie and I am an activities coordinator here at The Spires. We all know that keeping active is important. We have created a wonderful culture within the home and we work together to give residents the best possible experience. We are here to ensure that residents enjoy an environment that is both stimulating and socially active.

We ensure the team knows each residents' preferences, so that we can deliver a person-centered program of events and activities. Essential to our homely feel is the strong relationships of trust we build with residents and their families and friends.

Life at The Spires Care Home

Sunflower picking

Residents at the Spires care home in Lichfield recently visited their local maize Maze to have fun trying to find their way round and enjoy sunflower picking.

Joined by friends and family to the home, residents were led by the activities team at the home to Lichfield Maize Maze where they had fun escaping the maze which has been specially grown. After enjoying the maze residents enjoyed picking their own Sunflowers to bring back to the home.

Alpaca Visit

Residents at the Spires Care Home were pleasantly surprised to see their new furry friends roaming around their garden as Gordi and Ted the Alpacas from 4get-me-Nott small holdings paid a visit.

Resident Bridget was very excited by the Alpacas: “As a child I used to love all the animals on the nearby farm. Today was very enjoyable and it was wonderful that the animals were free to roam amongst us.”

Birthday BBQ

Staff, residents, relatives and the local community came together at the Spires Care Home to enjoy a 4th Birthday BBQ that was held in the home’s grounds on Saturday the 16th. The hospitality team at The Spires  served a selection of BBQ favourites including Burgers, hot dogs, King Prawns, corn on the cob & vegetable skewers which were enjoyed by everyone who came to the event. Guests included friends and family to the residents and staff at the home, and the Deputy Mayor Paul Jones also stopped in at the event. The team at the home also invited local singer Ruth Harvey who performed a range of classic hits including Abba  which many of the guests sang along to. Resident, Maisie Rusell said, “I thoroughly enjoyed the day surrounded by lots of great people. The staff did a great job, not just on the day, but organising the event and getting everyone together.”

Tour De barchester

Staff from Barchester Healthcare’s care homes up and down the country have taken on a grueling 211 mile cycling challenge from Bradford to London to raise money for Barchester’s Charitable Foundation which supports older people and other adults living with a disability or mental health problems by helping them to connect or re-connect with others in their local communities. On the 7th of July at 12:30 the tour stopped at The Spires Care Home in Lichfield where the home offered refreshments and held a cyclethon to help raise funds. Residents, their friends and family and staff from the home all got together to pass on their good wishes and cheer the cyclists on to victory.

Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day is a chance to show support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community from currently serving troops to Service families, veterans and cadets. This year The Spires Care home marked the occasion with a visit to the National Memorial Arboretuem to pay our respects. Amy Doyle, General Manager at The Spires Care Home, said: “We have a number of residents with personal ties to the military, and we made sure to use the occasion to thank them for their dedication to the country, and pay respect to those who lost their lives in the line of fire.

Ascot

Residents and staff at The Spires care home in Lichfield dressed to impress, donned their best hats, studied the form and had their bets at the ready for Royal Ascot, which ran from 14th – 18th June. Residents and staff got together to watch the races, and also celebrated in a very Royal Ascot fashion by enjoying a glass of fizz and some strawberries on our sun terrace and taking part in an afternoon modelling fancy hats. Amy Doyle, General Manager at the home, said: “We’ve had a fantastic time celebrating Royal Ascot, it is such a great event to watch and it is wonderful to see the crowds back again. We all had a little flutter between ourselves even though none of us has much of a clue about odds or form!” Irene, a resident at the home, commented: “I love Royal Ascot and seeing the Queen, the amazing hats and all the fantastic outfits. I haven’t got a clue about horse racing, I just choose the colours I like best!”
