Activities at The Spires Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Angie Smith

Activities Coordinator

Hi, my name is Angie and I am an activities coordinator here at The Spires. We all know that keeping active is important. We have created a wonderful culture within the home and we work together to give residents the best possible experience. We are here to ensure that residents enjoy an environment that is both stimulating and socially active.

We ensure the team knows each residents' preferences, so that we can deliver a person-centered program of events and activities. Essential to our homely feel is the strong relationships of trust we build with residents and their families and friends.

A Big 100th Birthday Celebration!

Helen Turner was joined by relatives, friends and staff at The Spires to mark her centenary. She received a telegram from the King and enjoyed a champagne reception as well as a cake baked for the occasion by our chef Polly Holmes.

Helen said: “I’m very pleased – I’m very lucky and have had a lovely day.”

Amy Doyle, general manager of The Spires Care Home said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating a truly remarkable woman as she reaches this amazing milestone. Helen is such a popular resident who always has an interesting tale to tell, and we look forward to hearing many more as she breaks into her next century.”

Memories to Music

Residents at The Spires Care Home have been enjoying a “Memories to music” dance class. The class is lead by Niki from Fusion Dance school and encompasses the old favourites as well as encouraging our residents to keep active! This class is a great hit in keeping us all fit and well!

Lichfield Cathedral

Residents at The Spires care home in Lichfield recently visited the moon via Lichfield Cathedral.  Joined by friends and family to the home, residents were led by the activities team at the home to Lichfield Cathedral where they saw the “Museum of the moon”. This is a touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram. Measuring seven metres in diameter, the moon features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. At an approximate scale of 1:500,000, each centimetre of the internally lit spherical sculpture represents 5km of the moon's surface.

Amy Doyle General Manger at The Spires care home, said: “This is such a fantastic exhibit and our residents had such a wonderful time. It was really eye opening to see such a close up view of the moon.”

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Staff and residents at Barchester’s The Spires  care home in Lichfield paid their respects to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, on the day of her funeral, 19 September 2022.  The whole home came together to honour and give thanks for the Queen’s long and extraordinary life of service to the British people and the Commonwealth over her 70 year reign, the longest of any British monarch. Residents and staff watched the televised service that took place at Westminster Abbey and observed the national two minutes silence in memory of the late Queen before she was laid to rest in St George’s Chapel in Windsor.  After the ceremony, staff and residents discussed their memories of the Queen and Prince Philip, and what the royal family has meant to them over the years.  They reminisced about royal tours, the Queen’s many milestones and her constant presence in all her subjects’ lives over the last 70 years.

60th Anniversary

A couple from The Spires care home, in Lichfield have celebrated 60 years of marriage. Anne and Bill met at a local dance in 1960 and it was love at first sight. Anne & Bill have two grandchildren and are expecting their first great-grandchild very soon! They say that the secret to their long relationship is being kind and understanding to each other. Anne and Bill moved to Lichfield to be near their son Andrew who works at Lichfield Cathedral. Family and friends came to The Spires to celebrate the couple’s special anniversary with staff and residents. The home arranged an afternoon tea for their family and a beautiful home made cake. General Manager, Amy Doyle at The Spires said: “We have had such a lovely day celebrating Anne and Bill’s anniversary. It’s so wonderful to see two people still very much in love after all these years!”

Harvest Thanksgiving Service

Residents from The Spires Care Home in Lichfield were invited to a special dementia friendly harvest thanksgiving service at Lichfield Cathedral. Residents were privileged to be invited to attend the special service for those living with Dementia and their loved ones. Many of our residents have a close connection with the cathedral and it was wonderful for them to be able to attend again
