Activities at The Spires Care Home
Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.
Angie Smith
Hi, my name is Angie and I am an activities coordinator here at The Spires. We all know that keeping active is important. We have created a wonderful culture within the home and we work together to give residents the best possible experience. We are here to ensure that residents enjoy an environment that is both stimulating and socially active.
We ensure the team knows each residents' preferences, so that we can deliver a person-centered program of events and activities. Essential to our homely feel is the strong relationships of trust we build with residents and their families and friends.
Read our brochure 'Life-enriching activities' for more information about life in our care homes.

Life at The Spires Care Home
Sian Reeves visit
Residents at The Spires were thrilled to welcome the talented writer, actor and singer Sian Reeves, best known for her roles in Cutting It, Emmerdale and Coronation Street, to the home on Saturday the 21st of September to launch her charity album ‘Remember This’ in support of the Alzheimer's Society.
Residents, staff and family had a great day listening and singing along with Sian and meeting her dog Ronnie! In her role as an Ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society, Sian’s aim is to visit as many care homes as possible across the country, sharing her music to not only entertain residents but also to help stimulate their minds through the therapeutic power of music.
Raising Funds for Comic Relief
What a fabulous day we all had raising money for Comic Relief!
The day was spent with plenty of laughter with staff wearing their pyjamas and red noses to work and a charity bake sale where we raised over £50.
A special thank you to our lovely carer, Jane for baking some delicious cakes for the occasion and a massive thank you to everyone who got involved and helped raise money for Comic Relief.
Celebrating St. Patricks Day
Residents enjoyed reading all about the history and traditions of St Patrick’s Day in our Dementia Book Club. One Resident told us how she got to be named because she was born in the same week, although she has no connection with Ireland her mother chose the lovely Irish name of Delia.
Later we were mesmerised watching traditional Irish dancers on the big screen whilst sipping Guinness, it was like having a little bit of Dublin here at The Spires.
We finished off our day with traditional Irish music and a sing-along of our favourite classics.
Thanks to our lovely Staff for help dressing Residents in green having their faces painted and joining in the fun.
Another great day making great memories.
Florence Knits Baby Hats for Local Maternity Ward
Our lovely Resident Florence (96) has been very busy these past couple of months knitting baby hats. With the help of Activity Co-ordinator Emily and Head of Maintenance Andy she visited Queen’s Hospital in Burton to deliver her knitted goods to the delivery suite.
They were very grateful to Florence as they had only ran out of knitted hats that day! With Florence coming to the rescue it was only right we stopped off at Morrisons on the way home to buy Florence a big slice of carrot cake!
Florence is looking forward to knitting some more hats for the future new arrivals at Queen’s Hospital.
Well done Florence, we are very proud of you!
Rock Painting with Grace Cares
We were pleased to welcome friends from Grace Cares and volunteers from the Aviva Community Fund Project.
Our visitors joined Residents in a relaxing rock painting session, everyone chose their own design and got down to business. Some chose a nature theme, drawing on bugs and flowers, others chose to do a quirky minion.
I'm sure you'll agree that we have some creative talent amongst us. Which is your favourite?
We have big plans for the rocks - we will showcase them in and around our garden, perhaps creating a fairy garden for all to enjoy - watch this space!
Thank you once again to the all the volunteers! See you again soon.
Enjoying the Simple Things in Life
Sometimes it is the simple things that mean the most. Just taking time to stop and enjoy what we have on our doorstep can mean so much. We are lucky to have amazing gardens here at The Spires, including a pond.
Residents took a leisurely stroll around our gardens, chatting with each other, spending time, soaking up the Spring sunshine and we even stopped to feed the ducks.
The advice from our Residents matches that of the wise Robert Brault quoting: 'Enjoy the little things in life, because one day you'll look back and realise they were the big things'.
