Activities at Hyacinth House Care Home
Our home is always full of life, and we can thank our wonderful Activities Coordinators for this. Dedication to creating a unique and interesting activities programme is what sets us apart from other homes. We always take into consideration that some people would prefer to pursue their own interests, which is why our team strive to incorporative activities that cater to a wide range of tastes and hobbies. Our trips out are always fun and exciting as well, and residents are guaranteed to return with stories to tell their loved ones!

Life at Hyacinth House Care Home

At Hyacinth House there is nothing we enjoy more..
than a good entertainer to get everyone tapping their feet.
Recently we had the absolute pleasure of meeting Mike Kempton. One of our newest singers who truly got everyone singing along with his fantastic selection of songs. Even had us singing the chorus along with him.
The highlight? Mike even managed to rope in our Admin Manager Jadzia for an Impromptu duet! It was such a pleasure to be the first groups to hear her sing.
What a joy to see everyone singing, smiling and sharing such a lovely afternoon together. We can't wait to welcome Mike back soon for another unforgettable performance.

Residents embrace new skills
Our activities coordinator, would say that one of the best parts of her role is getting to know our residents. Hearing their incredible life stories, each one filled with unique adventures, achievements, and experiences, plus a curiosity for learning new skills.
Recently, a few residents shared an interest in the art of macrame. A beautiful craft where simple ropes are transformed into masterpieces. Tammy jumped at the chance to make it happen!
To start she introduced them to creating feather keyrings, their first macrame project. It was a challenge, but they were all in! The concentration, laughter, and teamwork in the room made it an unforgettable session and the results? Absolutely stunning and our residents were really proud of their achievements! We’re already looking forward to exploring more macrame techniques and watching these talented residents become master crafters.
Stay tuned for more updates and creations from our residents, is there no limit to what they can do?

Speaker’s Corner - Dr A Char
Yesterday we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr Amit Char, Consultant radiologist, who specialises in Musculoskeletal imaging and intervention for an enlightening talk on the spine, back pain and arthritis of the lower back. Speakers Corner is a monthly free event and open to the community and it was fantastic to see so many residents, relatives, and community members fill the lounge!
Dr. Char's informative talk gave us valuable insights into understanding and managing back pain. The event included an engaging Q&A session, and it was wonderful to see everyone actively participating and benefiting from the discussion.
A huge thank you to Dr. Char for sharing his expertise with us! We look forward to welcoming him back in the future for more informative sessions.

Celebrating our amazing resident Gwen and her 60 Years Voluntary Service!
Recently a special celebration was held to honour Gwen R MBE for her extraordinary 60 years of voluntary service. This event, attended by local dignitaries, including the Mayor of Ferndown, Cllr Terry Cordery, the Mayor and Mayoress of Wimborne Cllr Jeff Hart and Barbara Hart and Mayor of Bournemouth, Cllr George Farquhar was a testament to Gwen’s remarkable dedication. Also joining the celebration were members of Gwen’s family, making the occasion even more meaningful.
Maria Jacobson, Royal Voluntary Service Manager for Dorset and the Home Library Service, accompanied by David Tozier, RSV Service Assistant for BCP Home Library Service, delivered a heartfelt speech reflecting on Gwen’s incredible service, especially within the Books on Wheels program.
Gwen’s volunteering journey began in October 1964 with the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS), now known as the Royal Voluntary Service (RVS) she served in numerous positions, including supporting refugees, participating in emergency services, and coordinating Meals on Wheels in Bournemouth. Even after retiring from her official roles, Gwen continued her voluntary work, delivering Books on Wheels until the pandemic interrupted the service.
In Gwen’s own words about her voluntary service with the (W)RVS:
“My first task was to collect clothing in an old Ford van for people in need. Also, we worked at a baby clinic handing out baby food such as powdered milk and orange juice. Over the years, I worked at the Hospital Canteen, Meals on Wheels, Books on Wheels, Victim Support and Harvest Distribution. 1979 was very interesting, refugees from Vietnam came to Sopley R.A.F radar camp. They arrived with only the clothes they stood in, by coach. The (W)RVS among other organisations made an appeal for clothing which then came in bags to be sorted. The first arrivals did not want the clothes but that night a gale blew and it was very cold; next morning the store room was full of refugees seeking something warm to wear. A school was set up for the children to learn English; adults also joined in. One day, an open top car arrived with Peter Townsend, an ex-Fighter Pilot hero. He came to interview the refugees for a book he was writing. Coaches continued to arrive for many days to be met by refugees looking for their family; there was joy and sorrow, but they never lost hope. Eventually the refugees dispersed around the country. I would love to know where they are now.”
Gwen was asked whether there was anything else she wanted to say about this occasion and she responded, “Peter Townsend thought we were all there for him! But we weren’t!”
Throughout her 60 years of service, Gwen has been an inspirational figure, and her commitment was deservedly recognised when she was awarded an MBE in 2006.
Her family also shared touching stories of Gwen’s dedication, recalling how she never hesitated to cover for others if they were unable to work and formed close bonds with the people she served. Even during the pandemic, she kept in touch with many of her clients, ensuring they were well and coping. “Gwen just epitomises the spirit of selfless service: from her Land Army days onwards. We are all so proud of her!
For us all at Hyacinth House it is a pleasure knowing Gwen and we were thrilled to be part of this fitting tribute to her lifetime of service. It was a special afternoon for Gwen surrounded by family, friends, and fellow volunteers, Gwen’s story continues to inspire, reminding us all of the profound impact one person can have on their community.
