Activities at Llys-Y-Tywysog Care Home

Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Paula Courtney

Activities Coordinator

Hello I am Paula the Activities Coordinator, I have recently returned to Llys-Y-Tywysog.  I worked at the home for over 5 years when my children were younger.  My close connection with Llys remained as my father in law was former resident, so I was still visiting regularly.  I am delighted to be back working with the team.

I am creative and hope to bring new ideas for activities and events as well as still running firm favourites!  My passion is about enhancing the lives of the residents from individual time through to big celebratory events.  Sarah will continue to work as part of the activities team, working alongside me part time whilst studying for her degree at Swansea University.  As a team we are committed to Barchester's Life Enrichment programme ensuring we work with mind, body and soul.

Easter Pottery

We are happy to welcome Jayne back for our first pottery workshop of the 2024. Jayne will be coming to Llys-Y-Tywysog every month for these workshops, one month creating our clay pieces, the next month Jayne will return with the fired ornaments ready for glazing. This weeks pottery session was Easter themed, making clay chicks, eggs, baskets and daffodils. Everyone enjoyed this session and was glad to catch up with Jayne after the Christmas break. The residents look forward to finishing our creations next month!

One Heart Drummers

What a fabulous afternoon we had with One Heart Drummers, who delivered an incredible music workshop, all with percussion instruments. As well as enjoying the beats created by residents, it was a big work-out as well! Only toned arms at Llys-Y-Tywysog. Residents had an amazing time and lots of laughs with staff as well.

Music has the amazing capacity to alter our moods for the better; reducing stress and anxiety, improving cognitive and physical skills, and providing a social activity for all the join in and enjoy.

It was our first visit from One Heart Drummers, but it certainly won’t be the last. We look forward to seeing them again in the spring!

Yer Wee Burns Night

Is there a better way to celebrate a culture than through food? We don’t think so! This Burns Night at Llys Y Tywysog we went all out, residents made scotch eggs for their supper, baked shortbread biscuits for their afternoon snack and, of course, had an afternoon whiskey tasting! Much to the pleasure of our resident, Alan, who loves his whiskey so much we took him to Penderyn whiskey distillery last year.

Our hospitality team put on an amazing Scottish spread; a starter of Cock A Leekie Soup, Balmoral Chicken with Haggis, Shepheard’s Pie with Neeps and Tatties for mains and Cranachan for pudding.

We are already looking forward the next months themed event, Chinese New Year!

Surprise Owl Visit!

Surprise visits are always the best! And what a surprise our residents had when the lovely Grandchildren of one of our residents come to visit their Grandmother, and brought their beautiful tawny owl called Pipsqueak. Residents enjoyed letting the owl perch on their hands and arms (with the help of some very thick gloves!) and stroke the beautiful soft feathers. The residents even got to enjoy a small demonstration, where the bird flew from one side of the room to the other after being tempted by a piece of meat the Grandchildren brought! Our very own indoor bird show, we are so grateful to the lovely family for sharing this experience with their Grandmother and all residents. Animal visits are always well enjoyed at Llys-Y-Tywysog, and the residents have been talking about it for days, their faces really do light up with these wonderful memories.

A very Musical Christmas

Now the Christmas season has passed, we reflect on what a fabulous time our residents had over the festive season! And it was music, music, music…

Our residents enjoyed performances from Gorseinon Brass Band, who brought a small ensemble to play an evening carol concert, so lovely to hear traditional sounds like this from talent in our community. Beti’s Choir returned to bless us with another fantastic performance of some classic Christmas songs, and a few modern ones too! Carl with Music for Health came dressed as an elf, much to the residents amusement, but also brought Santa with him! Darren the saxophonist got the residents dancing to some jazzy tunes. Robbie Lee performed for our residents Christmas Party on the 23rd, families and friends came along to enjoy and everyone was up and dancing, even after the incredible buffet spread that was provided by our tireless hospitality team. The ministers from Mt. Pleasant church led a carol service for the residents at their Christmas service on Christmas Eve.

It has been an amazing Christmas Season at Llys-Y-Tywysog. All of these incredible shows could not have happened if it weren’t for our fantastic activities coordinator, Paula, and we thank all friends and families for all their help in activities and events at the home. Happy New Year!

Jean attends Granddaughters Wedding

When our lovely Jean heard about her Granddaughters engagement, it was unsure whether she would be able to attend. But thanks to our fabulous carer Rhian who accompanied Jean on the trip, the two ladies made their way to Cardiff  to celebrate this very special and important day. Rhian and Jean spent the morning getting ready - hair, nails, make-up, the works! All whilst enjoying a glass of bubbly. Jean said we felt a million dollars! And we think they both looked beautiful in their dresses.

After watching the ceremony in the church, their ladies enjoyed a reception at Hansol Castle. Jean had such a fabulous day, being able to be present for her granddaughters wedding and spending time celebrating with all her family and friends. What a beautiful day.
