Activities at Peony Court Care Home

Our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to enhancing residents' quality of life by providing regular social and psychological stimulation. The activities can be undertaken in groups or ‘one-to-one’ and are based on individual preferences. We have a varied programme, with the goal of appealing to the interests and capabilities of all residents as best as possible. For example, there's pottery, baking, Scrabble, art classes, exercise sessions and much more. The Activities Coordinators also organise visits from entertainers, local groups, including school choirs, religious services and outings on the minibus.

Activities

Hi! I'm Paul, the Activities Co-Ordinator at Peony Court.

Before I joined the care sector I worked for many years in the hotel industry, managing housekeeping, hospitality and customer experience. Several members of my family have a history of working in care and I thought, maybe that could be me as well. I'm a natural entertainer with a flare for bringing smiles to people's faces and this was absolutely the right move for me.

Here at Peony Court, I make a point of getting to know each and every resident and their families. I tailor the activities program to suit individuals, no one is the same and everyone has different interests. It's my aim to be empathetic, enthusiastic and engaging with all of my residents. We have incredible activities and events here guided by exactly what our residents want, from pampering sessions to singing and dancing, chair exercises to arts and crafts, and diversity is absolutely the key!

I can't wait to welcome more residents and guests to Peony Court!

Hidden Voices

Residents were treated to a trip to The Bethlem Chapel recently to enjoy the dulcet tones of local choir The Hidden Voices - from Verdi to Simon & Garfunkle to Karl Jenkins and Avici, the repetoire was certainly eclectic and enjoyed by all!

A Fond Farewell

We never like to say goodbye and last week was no exception; our lovely Mr L decided to move north of the Watford Gap to be closer to family so we said farewell the only way we know how, with a smashing party.

Cake, bubbles and an opera singer, it was fabulous!

Dig for Victory?

We might not "need" to Dig for victory but our residents asked us how we could be more sustainable and lessen our carbon footprint so we thought we'd make a start with growing our own veggies!

We've harvested and eaten cabbage and tomatoes from our patch so far and both were delicious!

Our residents popped to the garden centre to see if there is anything else we could be growing but after a cup of tea decided we couldn't take the whole store home!

Happy Valley - Happy Residents

Here at Peony Court we are lucky enough to have our very own minibus so we can get out and about whenever our residents fancy it. On a recent trip we headed up to Farthing Downs, also known as Happy Valley and happy it was, sunshine and gorgeous views for miles, plus we took a flask of tea. What more could you want!

Carers Appreciation Week!

A Special Kind of Someone

It takes a special kind of someone to work in care

To play a role in someone’s life you need a bit of flare

Not only time but dedication can be an ask

Long days and nights somewhat of a task.

Education and qualifications are very much in reach

But empathy and listening are not skills you can teach

It’s the littlest things that can mean so much more

Giving someone your time is a value you can’t ignore

Days and nights can be long and relentless

And sometimes if feels like you’ve made very little progress.

But even on the toughest days you push aside your fears

For today you need to dry someone else’s tears.

Whether you’re making tea for someone

Or dancing and prancing and making life fun

You’ll hold the hand of a loved one as they say goodbye

An absolute privilege you cannot deny.

You brush yourself down and plaster a smile on your face

You know they’ve gone to a “better” place.

Someone else needs you now

So you brush yourself down, no one asks how.

You might not notice or know what difference you make

But you showed up today make no mistake.

It takes a special kind of someone to work in care

And today this little message is to make you aware

That YOU are our kind of special and what you do matters

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO CARE!

Testing the ol' grey matter!

Our residents love a game of cards or scrabble when the weather's not up to par and its surprisingly competetive!
