Activities at Spen Court Care Home
Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.
Angela Blackburn
My name is Angela and I am the Head Activities Coordinator here at Spen Court. I get so much satisfaction out of knowing I have made a difference to people’s days and have filled the home with a sense of community and happiness.
We feel it is important to build community connections and maintain our resident’s social interaction outside the care home.
We ensure we deliver a person-centered program of events and activities and build strong relationships with our residents, their families and friends.

As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies
Life at Spen Court Care Home
A relaxing morning
Residents in Pennine enjoyed a morning of reading. We enjoyed books which we receive from the Heckmondwike library service and the residents loved looking at all the different topics. Bob particularly enjoyed the book on farming.
This afternoon, residents in Memory Lane enjoyed some aqua painting. Aqua painting is a fun activity for residents which allows them to be creative and helps them feel relaxed.
Home celebrates 15-years long service
The Head Housekeeper, Sue Wilkinson at Spen Court Care Home in Heckmondwike has received a prestigious Service Award in celebration of working at Barchester Healthcare for 15 years.
Sue Wilkinson, is Head of the housekeeping and domestic team, started at Barchester in January 2009 and has worked with residents and their relatives to ensure that their needs have been met over the years.
International Flower Day
Margaret and Betty enjoyed sharing their creative side as the ended the afternoon with a spot of crafting. Bob and Keith both brought out their feminine side by choosing, cutting and making a beautiful arrangements for us all to enjoy.
Molly joined in with the floral fun, all residents thoroughly enjoyed joining in with the session.
The flowers all went on to displayed throughout the home resulting in visitors and family members making many positive comments regarding the efforts of the residents.
Medical Detection Dogs
Across our services residents had a fantastic time during a special live virtual event, led by Emilia from Medical Detection Dogs.
Emilia took us on a journey to discover how the organisation began training dogs to support people with complex health conditions, saving their lives on a daily basis.
Using their amazing sense of smell, these dogs can identify odour changes emitted prior an episode and alert the person to take preventative action.
We were introduced to the wonderful dogs and the science behind the sniff. It was a delightful experience for everyone, especially our canine-loving residents.
Barchester's Big Quiz
All over the country our care homes and hospitals linked up for Barchester’s Big Quiz of the year!
Residents tested their knowledge with a variety of questions, from historical humdingers and musical musings to pictorial puzzlers and connective conundrums.
Everyone who participated had a fantastic time and enjoyed some friendly competition.
Carol Singing with Kim Leadbeater
Heavenly voices rang out at Spen Court as the community came together to celebrate Christmas with a carol concert.
Staff and residents at Spen Court got in the Christmas spirit by inviting the community to come and join in with a carol concert to sing some festive Christmas favourites.
We had a very special guest who joined in the performance. Local MP Kim Leadbeater.
Kim is a Labour party politician who serves as a member of parliament for Batley and Spen since 2021.
