Activities at Wykeham House Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Rachel Stevens

Activities Lead

I joined Wykeham House in October 2022 but I have worked doing activities in care homes since I left College, I began volunteering in a local home when I was 15 years old and then took on my first job in a care home when I was 18. I have enjoyed extending my knowledge to improve my work and have a Level 2 in Dementia Awareness, Domestic Abuse Awareness and Mental Health Awareness. I have also attended courses on End-Of-Life Activities as well as Dementia focused Activities. I love what I do and for me it is important that every day is a new day for our residents with new opportunities and a smiling face to come with it.

Activities and Events Partnerships

As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies

World Book Day

Residents in our Memory Lane unit are taking part in an intergenerational project with the children from Ivy Cottage Nursery. This month the children joined us for World Book Day. They bought along some of their favourite books to read with our residents and their new Polaroid camera to take some pictures.

Seed Planting

Residents in Memory Lane have been preparing for our community gardening day on 13th April. We planted some lettuce seeds, swiss chard and a selection of flowers which we hope to place in our grow wall. We also filled up our solar powered water feature and watered our high rise bed.

Armchair Travel - Canada

On the first Monday of each month residents residents join us for Armchair Travel. This month we went on a trip all the way to Canada. In the morning residents enjoyed watching some traditional Canadian grass dancing and throat singing, in the afternoon they took a quiz to test their knowledge on Canada, enjoyed some trivia and some pancakes with Canada's most popular sweet treat Maple Syrup! In the evening we set up our projector screen and residents took a tour round Canada.

TinyTalks visit

TinyTalks is a local sign language and music group organised by Sarah that runs in the local community inviting infants to learn some sign language and enjoy a play session. On the 14th February Sarah hosted one of her sessions here at Wykeham House so the residents could spend some time with children.

Exercise with Vince

Every Friday residents are joined by the wonderful Vince for their weekly exercise class. Residents get a half an hour session each week where Vince helps with mobility and strengthening with ball and band work, relaxation with some Tai-Chi and our residents love it when he gets the pads out for some boxing!

Fighting Fit at Wykeham House.

Our residents love Vince’s exercise class on a Friday! Exercise is brilliant to improve dexterity, mobility and energy levels. Vince comes for half an hour each week and does some Tai-Chi, Band or ball work and some boxing practice for our residents! This class is available to anyone in the home. Please join us if you are around Fridays at 3.30pm
