Activities at Wykeham House Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Rachel Stevens

Activities Lead

I joined Wykeham House in October 2022 but I have worked doing activities in care homes since I left College, I began volunteering in a local home when I was 15 years old and then took on my first job in a care home when I was 18. I have enjoyed extending my knowledge to improve my work and have a Level 2 in Dementia Awareness, Domestic Abuse Awareness and Mental Health Awareness. I have also attended courses on End-Of-Life Activities as well as Dementia focused Activities. I love what I do and for me it is important that every day is a new day for our residents with new opportunities and a smiling face to come with it.

Activities and Events Partnerships

As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies

Intergenerational Sessions

Residents in Wykeham Houses Memory Lane unit were joined by children from Acorn Cottage Nursery ran by the Cranbrook Group. The children came to the home to sing nursery rhymes and play ball games with residents living with dementia. The residents were very excited to see the children and enjoyed the cakes and pictures the children made for them.

Jon McDevitt

In January we welcomed a brand new entertainer to Wykeham House. We had lots of wonderful entertainers in this month and have some exciting entertainment booked for the rest of the year. We introduced Oli a flutist to our residents, welcomed back Nigel Dawson for one of his talks and recently were joined by Jon McDevitt for a sing-along.

Sensory Areas

Bringing in the New Year bought a change to our sensory areas on memory lane. These areas have been beneficial to our residents since they came in to place and we wanted to make them even more interactive. In our memory lane unit you will see a home sense reminiscence area, a garden reminiscence area, a sewing reminiscence area and a seaside reminiscence area along with all new sensory baskets with tactile equipment for residents and a wonderful reminiscence box with newspaper articles, pamphlets and leaflets about many topics over the years.

Dorothys Wish Trip

Dorothy is our oldest resident here at Wykeham House. She turned 102 earlier this year. Before Dorothy joined us at Wykeham House she had not been out for almost 6 years. This Christmas we wanted to treat her to a special day out! Dorothy went on a private trip to a local Garden Centre where she got see the lights and do a bit of Christmas Shopping before enjoying lunch in their canteen.

Wreath Workshop

Residents enjoyed making their own Christmas Wreaths for their bedroom doors this year! The wreath masterclass was hosted by Rachel the activities lead. Residents began by wrapping their wreaths with artificial pine and then selected from the array of Christmas extras supplied. The wreaths are now decorating doors of the residents who participated in the activity around the home and it really is a beautiful touch.

Residents enjoyed getting ready in their jumpers and attending a photo shoot the images taken were then used for Christmas Cards for their family and friends.
