Activities at Boroughbridge Manor Care Home

We welcomed in the Year of the Tiger with a day of celebrations and activities.

The Chinese New Year is China’s most important festival that celebrated the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar calendar.

Inspired by Chinese culture and traditions, our residents enjoyed a creative session with Chinese New Year DIY dragons and made beautiful lanterns to mark the day.

We all enjoyed some music from Greater China, watched last year’s celebrations and had a discussion about the animals associated with the Chinese zodiac. It was a fun day.

Here at Boroughbridge Manor, our residents are very excited to take part in this year’s Big Garden Birdwatch and they got their binoculars and bird books out to support the initiative.

The RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch is an annual event to try to understand what is happening to our native birds. The idea is to log all the birds you see in your garden, from your window or in your local park in a one hour period any time between January 28th and 30th. Last year over 1 million people took part and between them they counted 17 million birds.

Our residents had a brilliant time filling up and making birdfeeders to attract the birds before they got started and then looking up the different species in their bird books to make sure they were logging them correctly.

It was a lovely time for everyone involved, especially the bird experts at the home.

Here at Boroughbridge Manor we had a fantastic time yesterday celebrating Burns Night.

To honour the famous Scottish poet, we hosted a poetry and music session to learn more about the Scottish Country Dancing and the Ceilidh and to mark the Scottish institution, including giving the time-honoured address to the ‘Great chieftain O’ the pudding’ race’ – the haggis. Our lovely resident Ann finished with Auld Lang Syne which she read beautifully.

Our tables were specially decorated with flowers and Scottish flags for the occasion as our residents enjoyed delicious Haggis, Neeps and Tatties followed by some delicious Dundee Cake prepared by our talented chef.

To carry on the celebrations, we had a lovely afternoon visit from KL PONY Therapy who was dressed up especially for the occasion. The residents were so happy to see.

We all had a wonderful time learning more about Robert Burns and the Scottish culture and traditions.

We celebrated International Flower Day in style, a great way in mid-winter to bring joy and happiness into the home. 

Residents took part in flower-based activities throughout the day joined in with activities all about flowers. They did colouring, quizzes and some beautiful flower arranging to make some spectacular arrangements. It also gave residents a chance to start planning what blooms we want in the garden this year to fill it full of colour! 

The collective knowledge about flowers gained from years of gardening experience was very impressive.

It was a lovely day, enjoyed by all.

We recently donated a hamper of treats for the dogs at Blue Cross Thirsk rehoming centre.

Activity Co-ordinator Shelbie said; “At Boroughbridge Manor we are passionate not only about people but animals too and we wanted to show this with a donation of Cotswold Premium doggie treats. We are all about giving whether that’s providing care, giving back to the community or supporting our four legged friends”

In recognition of World Religion Day, our residents have been learning all about different faiths and their holy days.

The aim of World Religion Day, is to promote interfaith understanding and harmony. Through a variety of events held around the globe, followers of every religion are encouraged to acknowledge the similarities that different faiths have.

We hosted a special service and asked our residents about their own faith and why it is important to them.

It was a lovely day here at Boroughbridge Manor.
