Activities at Elgar Court Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Kerrie Perks

Activities Leader

Hello, My name is Kerrie and I provide the unique life enrichment for residents at Elgar Court.  I moved to Malvern 12 years ago to live with my fiance and we have two tortoises and a snake.  I love to play Dungeons and Dragons with my friends.  I am very 'outdoorsy' and used to ride horses and compete nationally in athletics, specialising in track and field for Redditch and Bromsgrove athletics club.  In my spare time, I love being in the kitchen and making treats for my family.

World Menopause Day

Today is World Menopause Day, and we invited Dr Kirsten Protheroe from @Home Visit Healthcare  to discuss Menopause and answer questions on support available to women and men wanting to support women.  Dr Kirsten will be hosting other Menopause talks in the new year, so please sign up to our mailing list for future event dates.

Barchester has over 260 homes across the UK, with a third of it’s workforce of an age experiencing perimenopause and menopause.   At Elgar Court, we have dedicated menopause support for our staff, including a wonderful basket of goodies of Menopause information, relaxation aids, restorative refreshments and toiletries!  All Barchester managers and directors are incredibly sensitive and supportive to staff needs during this transition in a woman’s life, and we will do all we can to ensure they are listened to, and get the support they need.  Thank you!

Poppy Fields – Remembering

Our Home has started to prepare for Remembrance day on 11 November this year, with residents creating their own poppy fields to remember those who have lost their lives to ensure the liberty of this country. Groups of residents have been recycling the medication paper cups into poppies, and as you can see their are delightful and made with love. As usual, it’s very social, with laughter and chatter throughout the sessions with a beautifully crafted poppies waiting to be ‘planted’ outside our home.
National celebrations and family-friendly events are just some of the ways that we ensure the residents at Elgar Court remain connected with their loved ones and the wider community. Please do drop by over the next few weeks and see these Poppy wonders, and do join us for coffee and donate to the Poppy Appeal why you are here.

Spending Quality Time!

We are very excited to welcome two wonderful, well mannered young men from Malvern College, who will spend time with our residents over the next few months. Theodore and Alistair are currently studying at this prestigious international school, and also undertaking their Gold Duke of Edinburgh award.Theodore and Alistair, have been spending time hearing memories and sharing life experiences of residents and of their own lives. From listening to Ken talking about his time coaching Olympic runner Peter Radford and having tea with the late Queen, to playing Qwirkle with residents, the boys are popular new guests to our home.At Elgar Court, no day is ever the same, and we know that intergenerational activity is hugely beneficial to all involved as it encourages communication and social skills. It helps young adults to develop empathy, care and kindness, helping them to understand and talk more positively about ageing and older people.

Over £200 at our Macmillan Coffee Morning!

On Friday 27 September, our home was one of many venues across the UK which hosted the annual Macmillan Coffee morning to raise money to support specialist nurses to care for those being treated for cancer. We welcomed guests from our community to enjoy the scrumptious cakes made by our chef Mel and home made delights brought in by local well wishers. The generosity from residents, their families and guests raised over £200, and we are truly grateful we can pass this onto the Macmillan cancer charity!Over coffee, tea and cakes, everyone chatted with friends old and new, whilst being entertained by local musician Dartangnan. And our wonderful resident Jenny, loved being a 'Barista' for the morning!!At Elgar Court, we love hosting events that we can open up to our relatives, friends and the wider community. Life at Elgar Court is about being part of the local community and enjoying life long hobbies whilst also exploring new experiences.

Picnic in the Park

We are holding onto summer for as long as we can at our home! Residents really enjoy al fresco dining and the other day was no exception. Making the most of the fine weather - and the last of the summer sunshine, we headed off with our Deputy Manager Liz for a picnic in Priory Park in Malvern and a walk around the beautiful grounds.
