Activities at Falmouth Court Care Home

Another lovely trip in our minibus for our residents up to Pendennis Point. We had to take the chance while the sun was shinning as it so rarely does! Everyone enjoyed a delicious ice cream from Falmouth Dairy. They even had vegan ice-cream for one of our vegan residents who said it was the best vegan ice-cream she's had!

Everyone had the best afternoon and enjoyed looking out over Falmouth bay and reminisced over the cruises they had all been on over the years. One of our lady's, Pat Brown has been on 27 cruises during her lifetime.

What an amazing treat our residents had last week with a trip to Falmouth Art Gallery to see the phenomenal display 'Nuances of Light' by Jamie Medlin Marine Artist. Our residents and staff were blown away by the amazing talent and beauty of Jamie's work.

We were even lucky enough that Jamie himself came to meet our residents and chat with them about his paintings and his history of being an artist.

A huge thank you from us all at Falmouth Court to Jamie for coming along and we look forward to coming again soon.

To celebrate 'International Nurses Day' Hugh our Home Services Advisor popped along to the Falmouth District Nurses office to deliver Flowers, chocolates and biscuits as a massive thanks you for all they do for us and our residents at Falmouth Court as well as our local community.

To mark Dementia Awareness Week, staff and residents at Falmouth Court were delighted to be gifted beautiful branded memory boxes filled with retro Cadbury chocolate bars.

This inspirational idea came about through Cadbury’s work with Alzheimer’s Research UK, following requests from care homes and dementia support groups to the Cadbury archives for packaging no longer in circulation. Alongside Alzheimer’s Research UK, the business is working to create a nostalgic experience for those living with dementia, featuring iconic Dairy Milk bars, from as far back as 1915 until the present day.

The ‘Memory Bars’ form part of a wider package in the style of a memory box, which also features a digital download link, where people can find extra content, including classic posters and past packaging from other Cadbury products. The carefully selected archive material tells the story of an iconic British brand, this year celebrating its 200th anniversary, that has been part of people’s lives through generations, in moments big and small.

Since the opening of its first shop in Birmingham in 1824, Cadbury has delighted the nation with its confectionary and drinking chocolate. It has been with us throughout the everyday and seasonal moments, even popping out of our 99 ice cream cones on the beach. It’s the brand behind our favourite selection boxes, as well as the Cadbury Dairy Milk we unwind with on the sofa. Tastes we’ve known for generations – these have long been a part of Britain’s rich cultural history and the lives of Brits across generations.

But the brand’s impact over the past 200 years extends far beyond just creating delicious treats. Driven by a foundational spirit of generosity and kindness, Cadbury has helped nurture local communities and economies by investing in its factories, sites and employees. To mark the anniversary, Cadbury has partnered with Alzheimer’s Research UK, donating £200,000 to support research to one day find a cure for dementia and drive awareness of the condition. If nothing changes, one in two people will be affected by dementia in their lifetime, either by developing it themselves, caring for someone with the condition, or both. In doing so, Cadbury hopes to drive awareness around the fantastic work the charity does in helping to keep treasured memories alive for longer.

Staff and residents here at Falmouth Court used the Cadbury Memory Bar boxes along with many other chocolate bars to hold a chocolate tasting afternoon. Every one enjoyed the delicious treats and spent time remising over their favourite chocolate bars throughout the years.

Haley Reeve-Larson, General Manager at Barchester’s Falmouth Court Care Home said: “Our approach to caring for residents living with dementia is focused on positivity and delivering person-centred care – it can be a complex condition and at times frustrating both for the person living with it and their loved ones, as they experience changes in their abilities. An activity that we have found to be beneficial in improving cognition and mood is designing group activities to help residents reminisce and take a trip back through time – a great way of stimulating conversation. Through its Memory Bar Boxes, Cadbury has brought joy to generations of people. The memorable wrappers brought positive happy stimuli during these activities and provided an opportunity to share memories and laughter together.”

As part of the celebrations, we wanted to answer special requests that had been coming from care homes, dementia support groups and members of the public over the years, for nostalgic Cadbury wrappers and posters, which could provide a sense of comfort and connection to those living with dementia.

And now those bars feature within these Memory Bar Boxes, which will be sent around the country to people affected by the condition. Celebrations have been in full swing at Falmouth Court Care Home, as one of our residents reaches her 103rd birthday in style.

Beryl Corry born in Wales, served in the Royal Airforce in WW2. While serving in Egypt for 2 years Beryl met her husband. They lived locally in St. Ives where Beryl was President of the WI. Beryl has 3 daughters who all came to help celebrate the milestone with an afternoon tea party here at Falmouth Court. She was joined by staff, fellow residents and family to enjoy a delicious cake made by our Chef, Richard Sutton.

We’re delighted to be celebrating a truly remarkable woman as she reaches this amazing milestone. Beryl is such a popular resident who always bring joy and laughter to the home.

We marked the anniversary of Victory in Europe Day in style by throwing a 1940s afternoon tea party to remember. The home was decorated in red, white and blue and residents and staff dressed up in their 1940s-inspired glad rags and enjoyed an afternoon of big band music and dancing.

Our head chef Jon Moyle whipped up a delicious selection of freshly-baked scones with jam and cream (Jam first of course), sandwiches, cakes and pastries for the occasion, all washed down with pots of tea and a celebratory glass of fizz to mark the occasion.

Everyone enjoyed music from singer ‘Andy the Crooner’ who sung many classics including Frank Sinatra ‘New York New York’ and Bobby Darin ‘Mack the Knife’.

Penryn’s Royal British Legion’s President, Chaz Weymouth came along with a group of members to give a talk to our residents to end the afternoon.

We had the added bonus of holding the event in the garden to enjoy the sun too.
