Activities at Hollyfields Care Home

Our Activities programme is formulated using resident requests and feedback from resident meetings. Residents are involved in planning the programme with things they they would like to do throughout the year. There is a mixture of activities that take place including both group and 1-1 engagement. Residents at Hollyfields particularly enjoy movement to music activities enabling them to increase their level of physical abilities and have fun at the same time, whilst others enjoy musical singalongs and food based activities throughout the week.

We have a mini bus that enables us to reconnect our residents with their community in ways that suite themselves as individuals. This can be achieved by visiting local farms, Georgian towns, local attractions and even the local public house for lunch with friends. Hollyfields have a great relationship with their local community and have visits from local organisations such as The Wyre Community Land Trust and are currently undertaking a 12 week funded project from Arts Etc. Residents at Hollyfields enjoy Pet Therapy visits from their pet rabbit 'Thumper' and like to help clean and feed him daily. Relatives can be encouraged to join us for activities and again are very supportive with delivering theme days and fundraising events within the home.

Remembrance 'Poppy' Stones

The gentlemen of Ivy House have started to paint poppies on stones for remembrance day. We can't wait to see the final pieces, once they've been varnished and protected from the autumn elements they will be placed in the garden as a tribute to call the war fallen.

A Cracking All Hallows Eve

Virtual Magical Mystery Tour - Cruising with Unilever

Our staff and residents at Hollyfields were treated to a virtual cruise and interactive cookery demo taking in some mocktails, exotic dishes and mystery destinations courtesy of chef, Paul Hawkins, and Lisa Richards from Unilever’s Away from Home team which supports the care sector.

Chef Paul whipped up some tasty treats in a live, interactive cookery demo.  Much to residents’ delight, the Hollyfields head chef Sarah Finch had prepared the same recipes so that residents could try all the dishes. As they pulled into each port on the cruise, residents were given clues to identify where they were visiting and then Paul created a typical dish from that country for everyone to taste.

Residents started off in Hamburg where they sampled Labskaus, a hearty dish of mashed potatoes, corned beef and beetroot served with a fried egg and pickles.  Next it was off to Rotterdam to try delicious Bittenballen or crispy Dutch Meatballs.  Finally the residents docked in Zeebrugge where they tasted Mattentaart, a traditional sweet puff pastry almond-flavoured tart.

Paul said “It was an absolute pleasure to be able to prepare these dishes for the Barchester residents and even more so because they got to taste them, despite my not being able to be there in person. Thanks to all the chefs in Barchester homes across the country who supported me to deliver this really lovely activity.”

Lucy Tomlinson, Resident Experience Manager for Barchester Healthcare, commented: “We are excited to work with our amazing partners like Unilever to bring a wide range of fantastic experiences into our homes for all to enjoy.  It was great to see the residents all enjoying the scenery from the cruise and the recipes, they were so well received.

“Our varied life enrichment programme keeps residents active and socially connected, providing a daily choice of engaging physical, mental and spiritual activities tailored to residents’ interests and abilities,” Lucy added.

General Manager, Sharon Herbert said: “This was a virtual cookery demo and a magical mystery tour all rolled into one, it was brilliant that our residents were able to taste the recipes as they were being prepared whilst imaging themselves on a cruise, mocktails in hand!  It was a really enjoyable - not to mention delicious - afternoon, we’re so grateful to Paul, Lisa and Unilever.”

Preparing to Set Sail with Unilever

Our staff and residents are getting super excited about the live MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR Virtual Cruise event scheduled for today, Thursday 14th October at 2.30pm.

We’ve been busy decorating the home with a holiday theme; including palm trees, bunting and even a customised cocktail bar!

This special event has been provided courtesy of the Barchester Life Enrichment team and will be hosted by special guests - Paul Hawkins and Lisa Richards from our partners at Unilever.

Starting with mocktails our residents will join the virtual cruise on a journey to 3 mystery destinations with food demonstrations on how to create a few of the local dishes.

The Hollyfields chef and hospitality team have the recipes and will be serving our residents at each destination, giving them the opportunity to taste the dishes for themselves.

As the cruising event is fully interactive, our residents will be able to give feedback throughout. We’ll keep you posted on how our holiday goes… Bon Voyage!
