Activities at Thistle Hill Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Life at Thistle Hill Care Home

Valentine's Day

Thistle Hill was filled with music, laughter and sweet treats in celebration of St Valentine’s Day.   Staff and residents celebrated the day of love by dancing, singing and enjoying pink cream tea with glass a of fizz.

General Manager, Mandy, said: “We’ve all had a lovely day decorating the home and making gifts for each other and for our loved ones. Lots of our residents were able to see their loved ones either in person or via video call. We’ve had a whole range of treats and Valentine’s themed fun and we have enjoyed every moment of it!”

Home celebrate Year of the Dragon

Staff and residents at Thistle Hill in Knaresborough welcomed in the Year of the Dragon with a day of celebrations and activities.

Inspired by Chinese culture and traditions, the home was decorated with hanging red and golden decorations. Residents learnt all about the traditions and superstitions of Chinese New Year and made red drums for good luck. Head chef Ewelina cooked up an oriental feast for lunch and residents enjoyed the delicious food washed down with Chinese flowering tea.

Burns night at Thistle Hill

Today we had a lovely Coffee Morning.  In celebrations of what would be Robert Burns birthday we have read some of his poems including ‘John Anderson my Jo’, sung ‘Auld Lang Syne’ and did the Burns themed quiz.

Of course we were snacking on popular Scottish treats and toasted to ourselves with glass of Irn-Bru while listening to bagpipe tunes.

Good time was had by all.

Medical Detection Dogs

Across our services residents had a fantastic time during a special live virtual event, led by Emilia from Medical Detection Dogs.

Emilia took us on a journey to discover how the organisation began training dogs to support people with complex health conditions, saving their lives on a daily basis.

Using their amazing sense of smell, these dogs can identify odour changes emitted prior an episode and alert the person to take preventative action.

We were introduced to the wonderful dogs and the science behind the sniff.  It was a delightful experience for everyone, especially our canine-loving residents.

Another fun day at Thistle Hill!

This afternoon we welcomed back our favourite Pete Goldup - The Silent Disco DJ.

This time Pete served us a good rendition of 70s classics. Residents enjoyed singing and dancing to well known hits. It was a pleasure to see that everyone was having a good time.

Not only was it great fun but a good opportunity for residents to stretch and exercise. We love music related activities!

International Flower Day

Residents at Thistle Hill Care Centre in Knaresborough celebrated International Flower Day which took place on January 19th.  International Flower Day promotes the psychological boost that flowers can give to people. From growing and nurturing plants and flowers, to gifting flowers to show love and appreciation, and sometimes just the simple act of admiring their beauty – flowers have the power to make someone’s day.

Residents took part in flower-based activities throughout the day including planting bulbs of flowers, creating flower photo frame, virtual visit to Great British Gardens on YouTube and house plants display which everyone really enjoyed.  Their collective knowledge about flowers gained from years of gardening experience was very impressive.
