Activities at Glenroyd Care Home

Here at the Glenroyd our specialist activities staff are committed to organising a mix of activities and events for residents and the local community to get involved in, including trips out to local places of interest in our minibus and visits from entertainers and musicians. Everyone is different and gets pleasure from different things and here at Glenroyd we understand that and therefore try to provide a programme of activity that is tailored to individuals needs. We do this by gathering information and life history work and using that information to feed into our activities schedule. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can.

Agata Prendota

Activities Coordinator

Hi, my name is Agata Prendota and I am the activities coordinator here at Glenroyd. I have worked at Glenroyd since 2014 and in April 2022 transferred to activities. I developed a strong relationship with many of our residents and their families. This has helped me to create a tailored activities program focused on maximizing everyone’s wellbeing, independence, and social engagement.

It is my goal to create a stimulating environment that enables to provide imaginative, fun, and motivational activities that suit every interest and ability. My infectious enthusiasm and creative approach are the key to inspire our residents and staff to get involved in activities both within the home and in the local community.

I am passionate about my role and especially the challenge of coming up with new ways to engage as many residents as possible in daily activities.

Alpaca adventure!

Glenroyd care home, in Blackpool, was full of animal mischief on Monday when a group of alpacas came to visit the home.   Residents at Glenroyd were pleasantly surprised to see their new furry friends roaming around their garden as Lowland Farm Alpaca’s paid a visit.

General Manager Sonia said: “Our residents have really enjoyed their unusual visitors today. We knew that having the farm here would be a bit of fun for all our residents, especially as some find it difficult to go on many outings in our minibus.  We are always looking for new activities for the residents and today we have seen the seen the enjoyment and the therapeutic influence animals can have on people.”

Intergenerational visit

This afternoon at Glenroyd we had a lovely visit from our nursery friends. We had a colouring session today and both residents and children enjoyed colouring our jungle theme pictures.

After we finished the colouring everyone enjoyed some refreshments before our friends said good bye and headed back to nursery.

As always it has been a pleasure having you visit and we hope you enjoyed your afternoon as much as we did here! Also, we wish you all the best of luck with starting your new journey at BIG school next week

Flower arranging

Flowers stimulate the senses of smell, sight and touch and in doing so can also trigger memories. Research has proven that there are many benefits of flower arranging. As well as enabling residents to be creative and use their imagination, it also improves hand motor skills and is a great stress reliever, promoting a calm atmosphere.

This afternoon Residents at Glenroyd embraced a seasonal activity in the form of flower arranging. Using a variety of beautiful flowers Residents enjoyed creating their very own personal displays. There was a lot of singalong as our lovely Residents enjoyed Tom Jones music whilst perfecting the arrangements.

Games afternoon

In the morning our residents really enjoyed engaging in the exercise. These were group and individual sessions around the home. Our residents love nothing more than keeping fit and working on motor skills.

In the afternoon our residents enjoyed Snakes and Ladders to get a bit of friendly competition. The game went down a storm and residents really enjoyed themselves.

One resident said she remembered playing Snakes and Ladders with her children when they were small, and that it was great to reminisce about it.

Wallace Collection

Our homes had a fantastic time joining members of the Wallace Collection for an amazing sensory session.

During the live virtual experience, our residents explored one of the museum’s most beautiful Dutch flower paintings and learnt new drawing techniques.

We cannot wait to put our creative skills to a test and produce beautiful paintings of our own.

Everyone enjoyed the lovely talk, we all had lots of fun and it’s given us plenty of ideas.

Paying our respects to Her Majesty

We paid our respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the day of her funeral, 19 September 2022.  The whole home came together to honour the Queen, her extraordinary life and service to the nation and the Commonwealth over 70 years of reign, making her the longest-reigning monarch in British history.

We all watched the televised service of the State Funeral that took place in Westminster Abbey, followed by the Committal Service in St George’s Chapel, on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

After the official ceremony, we had a discussion about our much loved and respected Queen, her early life and numerous milestones. We all shared our memories of her and reminisced about her extraordinary reign and contribution to our country.

In loving memory of the Queen, we worked hard to create our own Memorial Area with candles and photos of the Queen, which staff, residents, families and friends can visit anytime. We also created a book of condolences, which was signed by residents, staff and families alike.

For many of our residents, the Queen represented comfort, hope and peace over the past seven decades of her sovereignty, and she will be sorely missed.
