Activities at Spen Court Care Home

Our teams are trained to enrich the lives of residents through stimulating the mind, body and soul, and taking the time to learn about each person to ensure everyone receives support that adds enrichment to their life.

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Angela Blackburn

Head of Activities

My name is Angela and I am the Head Activities Coordinator here at Spen Court. I get so much satisfaction out of knowing I have made a difference to people’s days and have filled the home with a sense of community and happiness.

We feel it is important to build community connections and maintain our resident’s social interaction outside the care home.

We ensure we deliver a person-centered program of events and activities and build strong relationships with our residents, their families and friends.

Activities and Events Partnerships

As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies

Life at Spen Court Care Home

Century celebrations

Celebrations have been in full swing at Spen Court as one of its residents reaches his centenary in style.  David Parker celebrated the day with family, friends and fellow residents.  David received a telegram from the King in recognition of his landmark birthday. A champagne reception was held at the home and guests enjoyed a special birthday cake or two.

David served in the Royal Navy. He went on a troop ship to Bombay before going on to join the Royal Naval Air station in Ootacumund in India.  Following on from the Navy, David went on to be a curtain salesman, which he thoroughly enjoyed. David did this for a lot of years. He has travelled far and wide by both land and sea.

Delight as Salvation Army choir perrform

We were so pleased to welcome to Spen Court the Salvation Army choir from Heckmondwike. They treated us to a great performance of Christmas carols, the residents and visitors sang along, it was a wholehearted afternoon.

They brought along a special guest. Merry the sausage dog, yes, Merry, as in Christmas. She was an absolute delight, following the performance Merry and her owner took the time to greet the residents receiving lots of hugs for the well behaved singing performance.

Residents enjoy festive lunch at local carvery

Spen Court got in the Christmas spirit by visiting Heathfield Farm in Birkenshaw, Bradford for a Christmas lunch.

Residents and staff had a brilliant time, we were greeted by a friendly face and shown to our reserved seating where the table was beautifully decorated and Christmas crackers. Heathfield Farm is a firm favourite of residents for the carvery’s delicious traditional pub menu.

A Christmas Carol with the Old Vic

Across our homes we’ve had the most wonderful time celebrating the festive season with a special screening of 2020’s OLD VIC: IN CAMERA – A Christmas Carol.

This beautifully staged production brought the magic of Dickens’ classic tale right into our homes. A huge thank you to The Old Vic theatre for sharing this incredible performance with us. It was a truly wonderful experience.

Festive Floristry Workshop

Staff and residents across our homes were treated to an interactive virtual Christmas-inspired table decorating masterclass, courtesy of talented master florist, Kathryn Delve.

Kathryn is an independent florist based in Somerset, she specialises in creating unique wedding and event flowers.  She takes much of her inspiration for her displays from the beautiful scenery that surrounds her home and the changing seasons and colours.

During the workshop, residents were invited to join Kathryn to make beautiful Christmas-themed table decorations.

Popular vocalist brings guide dog to home

Spen Court was treated to a visit from popular vocalist, Lindsey.  Lindsey is registered blind so we are also treated to a visit from Iris who is a working dog for Lindsey and Quaver who is Lindsey’s previous guide dog but they kept her as a pet.

Lindsey is an amazing entertainer and the residents really enjoy when she comes to perform for us, plus we have the added bonus of Quaver and Iris.
Both dogs are of a beautiful temperament and really enjoy spending time with the residents.  The visits are entertaining, heart warming and enjoyable for all.
