Activities at Spen Court Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Angela Blackburn

Head of Activities

My name is Angela and I am the Head Activities Coordinator here at Spen Court. I get so much satisfaction out of knowing I have made a difference to people’s days and have filled the home with a sense of community and happiness.

We feel it is important to build community connections and maintain our resident’s social interaction outside the care home.

We ensure we deliver a person-centered program of events and activities and build strong relationships with our residents, their families and friends.

Life at Spen Court Care Home

A breath of fresh air

The residents of Spen Court have been enjoying some summer fun recently!

They have enjoyed fresh air outings on the greenway located close to the home as they took advantage of the recent warm and brighter weather.

Birthday wishes!

Birthday celebrations are an important feature within the homes life enrichment programme and we were delighted to celebrate with Betty this month as we raised a toast to 90-years young.

The birthday girl was presented with a colourful floral display and balloon, before receiving a delicious homemade cake especially prepared by Head Chef, Nick.

Happy Birthday, Betty!

Homes come together for 'Big Quiz'

Barchester care homes and hospitals nationwide linked together for a fantastic quiz in celebration of Barchester’s 100th live virtual event.

Residents engaged in a variety of questions ranging from historical trivia to visual puzzles and brainteasers.

Everyone who joined had a fantastic time and enjoyed some friendly competition.

Dance show spectacular

Residents, Anne and Christine, at Spen Court have always had a passion for music and dance. Anne is first on the dance floor when we have entertainment in the home. Anne always says she isn’t wearing the correct footwear to be dancing then proceeds to dance the afternoon away.

Music and dance has always played a big part of most of the residents lives, it’s the one thing they have in common. They would attend social dances with partners or with friends. Talking about the days of when they would go dancing always brings a smile to their faces

Cook Off 2024

Staff and residents are celebrating because their wonderful Managing Director, Fiona Fagan, from Barchester’s North East and Scotland Division, has stepped completely out of her comfort zone to compete in the Barchester Charitable Foundation Cook Off 2024.

Fiona went head-to-head with the Managing Directors from Barchester’s four other divisions and cooked up a storm to raise a phenomenal £24,595 for Barchester’s Charitable Foundation which helps connect vulnerable people and those living with a disability to community groups in their local area by providing grants to improve mobility and quality of life.  Each year the Foundation distributes thousands of pounds to individuals, small community groups and charities across England, Scotland and Wales.

Inside the Eden Project

Residents across our homes had a fantastic time exploring the Eden Project virtually - an educational charity and visitor attraction based in Cornwall, featuring sprawling outdoor gardens and breathtaking biomes that house the largest indoor rainforest in the world.

During the session, residents who joined were reconnected with nature through their senses, memories and stories.  A big thank you to the community team at the Eden Project for the wonderful event.
