Activities at Waterside Court Care Home

Our teams are trained to enrich the lives of residents through stimulating the mind, body and soul, and taking the time to learn about each person to ensure everyone receives support that adds enrichment to their life.

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

A Magical Christmas visit to Blenheim Palace

Residents from Waterside Court enjoyed a truly special day out to Blenheim Palace, joined by our sister home, Oxford Beaumont Care Community - Barchester Healthcare and several family members, , who joined us to create lasting memories in this stunning historical setting.

A standout highlight was The Palace of Oz —an immersive, Wizard of Oz–inspired experience featuring the Yellow Brick Road, the Emerald City, dazzling light displays, interactive scenes, and beautifully told stories that sparked joy and nostalgia for all. We were wonderfully supported and warmly welcomed by the Blenheim Palace team, whose care and attention made the day seamless and extra special.

It was a magical celebration of togetherness—one that left hearts full and memories to treasure.

We had a fantastic Christmas Wreath-Making Workshop here at Waterside Court!

Fran led the session beautifully, bringing plenty of festive cheer and creativity to the room. Our residents had an amazing time crafting their very own Christmas wreaths — each one bursting with colour, personality, and Christmas spirit.

It was extra special to see families and friends joining in, supporting residents and creating wonderful moments together. This festive activity boosted creativity, encouraged social connection, stimulated cognitive activity, and enhanced overall wellbeing for our residents.

A huge thank you to Fran for leading such an inspiring and joyful session. The wreaths looked stunning — and the smiles were even brighter!

Knitting for Cherished Children

At Waterside Court, our Knitting and Natter Club has become a cherished space where creativity flourishes and friendships grow. Guided with passion and patience by Shirley, our residents have dedicated countless hours to crafting something truly meaningful.

We’re delighted to unveil our first completed blanket—a beautifully woven piece that captures the warmth, care, and shared moments of everyone involved. This milestone marks the beginning of an ongoing journey, with many more blankets already being created, each destined to bring comfort and reassurance to children in hospital settings.

Shirley’s talents also brighten our wider community. Her recently knitted Christmas decoration for our post office has added a festive touch that brings joy to residents, visitors, and staff alike.

From the hands of our Waterside Court community to children in hospitals and beyond, our kindness continues to reach those who need it most—carried gently in every stitch.

D-Day Dollies Help Us Remember

During remembrance week we were honoured the fallen, and celebrated all they did for us with a war time performance courtesy of 'The D-Day Dollies'. This amazing duo sang classics by Vera Lynn, Doris Day and Frank Sinatra which filled our home with warmth and nostalgia.

Their music stirred memories, and many residents grew emotional as they reminisced and shared stories from years gone by. It was a moving reminder of how music can connect generations and help us honour the past in a heartfelt way.

Moments like these remind us of the importance of remembering—together.

Residents were treated to a live musical performance by the talented Doug Loveridge, whose songs brought joy and nostalgia to the room. The evening was made even more special as we gathered to wish our lovely Dotty a very happy birthday!

To indulge our sweet tooth, we enjoyed a decadent chocolate fondue, complete with fluffy marshmallows and a selection of fresh, fruits – a delicious treat that everyone enjoyed. As the night drew to a close, residents stepped outside to enjoy the gentle sparkle of hand-held sparklers, adding a magical finishing touch to a truly memorable celebration!

Waterside Court was delighted to host a festive Christmas Fayre, bringing together residents, families, friends, and members of the local community. The event featured a variety of seasonal stalls, including Christmas cards, wreaths, knitted crafts, candles, a tombola, and Santa’s Grotto.

The fayre created a joyful and welcoming atmosphere, with children enjoying the opportunity to meet Santa, take photographs and join in festive singing. Residents were at the heart of the celebrations, enjoying the occasion and the chance to connect with loved ones and the wider community.

Guests also enjoyed traditional festive treats, including mince pies, which added to the warmth and enjoyment of the afternoon. The event was a great success and reflected the strong sense of community at Waterside Court.

Thank you to everyone who attended, supported the stalls, and helped make the day such a memorable celebration.

The season’s warmth arrived early at Waterside Court, brought to life by a beautiful Classicial Music performance from the talented duo 'King & Rackham'.

They treated everyone to a beautiful mix of songs — from the soothing grace of “Moon River” to the cosy warmth of “White Christmas,” and even a spirited take on “Fly Me to the Moon.” Each piece brought its own spark, creating a lovely atmosphere and plenty of happy faces.

“It was the ideal start to the festive season, lifting everyone’s spirits in the loveliest way.”

Benson Christmas Tree Festival

Today we enjoyed a truly fantastic visit to St Helen’s Church in Benson for their Christmas Tree Festival 2025. Our residents were delighted by the creativity and imagination on display, with beautifully decorated Christmas trees crafted by members of the village community.

This outing felt especially meaningful for our resident Sheila, who was once an active member of the church. She was reunited with many familiar faces and spent time reminiscing and sharing cherished memories, which made the day even more special.

We finished our visit with a warm cuppa and a slice of delicious cake—perfect for a chilly winter’s day. A wonderful experience for all our residents at Waterside Court.

'Honouring Heros' with Elaine Shepherd

Today at Waterside Court, we were honoured to welcome Elaine Shepherd for a truly inspiring Honouring Heroes session. Elaine shared the remarkable story of her volunteer work with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, where she tenderly cares for nearly thirty WWI and WWII headstones across seven local graveyards—quiet, dedicated acts of remembrance that preserve the stories of those who served.

Elaine also offered a moving insight into her involvement with Standing with Giants at the British Normandy Memorial. Through her research, Elaine uncovered both a photograph and the memorial inscription of Lt. William Temple, a young paratrooper who stepped bravely into history on Day 1 of the D-Day landings. Though he tragically later succumbed to his wounds, Elaine ensures his courage and sacrifice continue to be remembered. Thanks to her, he is not forgotten.

Elaine’s visit filled our home with warmth and reflection. With families joining us through our Life Enrichment Programme, we shared a meaningful moment that honoured service, sacrifice, and the enduring importance of remembrance.

Thank you, Elaine, for bringing your passion, dedication, and heart to Waterside Court. It was a powerful and unforgettable day of connection and commemoration.

A sense of Freedom 'Cycling Without Age'

This Thursday, our residents experienced something truly wonderful. Thanks to Cycling Without Age, Mick and Tim brought two trikes to Waterside Court, giving five of our residents their first-ever trike ride. The journey took them through Winterbrook Meadows, the town centre, the riverside, and OU Rowing Club. Along the ride, residents also made new friends and connected with the wider community, strengthening bonds beyond Waterside Court.

The ride offered much more than fresh air—it brought a sense of freedom, adventure, and connection to the outdoors. Some residents rediscovered familiar sights, while others savoured the gentle thrill of being on the move again, sharing stories and laughter with one another.

To cap off this wonderful day, we were thrilled to hear that Cycling Without Age Wallingford received £500 from the Wallingford and Didcot Rotary Club, helping to create more opportunities for our residents to enjoy experiences like this and continue engaging with the community.

A big thank you to Shelley and TJ for bringing colour, joy, and learning to our day here at Waterside Court.
